Mass Effect - Andromeda: Nexus Uprising (Mass Effect: Andromeda, 1)

A great companion for the game. So much Lore!
Let me preface this review by stating that I completed the main game of Mass Effect Andromeda before I read this book. So I had some pretty strong pre conceived notions of most of the characters involved with this novel. The book focuses on Sloane Kelly and the inhabitants of the Nexus as they are woken up following their first encounter with the Scourge. In the game we are introduced to the Nexus long after the events of the book have concluded and they are still picking up the pieces. But through this book we see the events unfold that are only discussed in the game. I'm a big fan of expanding the Lore of a story and this book serves that purpose very well. It's not a literary masterpiece but for a tie in novel to a video game its an enjoyable if quick read.Long story short, this is a fun read if you are interested in expanding your knowledge of Bioware's new stories in the Mass Effect Universe. There is nothing here that you can't guess from the way things turn out in the game, but it's always fun to see things from all sides, and to learn more about how people ended up where they ended up.

Pretty good. A little slow at times.
The book is good and fits well inside the Mass effect universe. For the most part I enjoyed reading it. However there are a few parts where the story drags along. If you like the Mass effect universe you will probably like this book. Also if you have played Andromeda this book helps to expand your understanding of the events leading up to Ryder's arrival at the station and gives context to Sloan's character. It's a good addition to the story in the game.

Great extension of the storyline
I gave this a five star because of exactly this , it was a great extension of the storyline to the games. It fills you in on some of characters that they don't go as in-depth as the main ones in the game. At same time gives you more background to the main characters as well.if you have enjoyed the game and any of the other books you will find this story as much fun as the others. I have really enjoyed the mass effect universe since the beginning, and it's is a great tribute to all the science fiction that has come before it, everything is in it from star trek to star wars, battlestar galactic, buck Rogers, forbidden planet to name a few. But having its own twists and it's great originality. I would like to tell more about story but don't want to ruin the adventure for anyone. Well worth the read. Only con that I thought was that the characters thoughts might have been in their dialogue a bit more. But that's just my opinion, so check it out.

A lot of build up but little payoff
This is by far the thickest of the Mass Effect novels (including the Karpyshyn novels and the one that shall not be named), and honestly, it feels it. What starts off as an interesting read, becomes a slow trudge through page after page as you just wait for the actual uprising the story is named after to begin. There's even a small section where it seems like it's starting only for that to be a red herring and the trudge begins once more. When it actually does happen, it happens comparatively quickly near the end of the book, and with the main rebellion happening with only two or three main points, it almost feels unsatisfying. The book also feels like it expects you to have already played Andromeda before you read it, so you should have certain opinions about certain characters before you read it. Which makes it a bit more difficult to accept the amount of lore contradictions it has from the game that spawned it. This may sound like a nitpick, but even the game treats the actual Uprising vaguely enough that I don't necessarily understand why they needed to make these changes. That being said, the story isn't bad, and pretty much every new character introduced in the book was enjoyable. They do well to show how the new leadership is trying their best but simply isn't doing well do to a mixture of their own egos and ideas rubbing against each other. I can't recommend you stay away from this book, but I can't in good faith recommend this book above any of the other Mass Effect books.

Great book
Really interesting read that fleshes out the events of the Nexus before Pathfinder Ryder arrives at the beginning of Mass Effect Andromeda. It gives depth to many of the characters you encounter in the Mass Effect Andromeda game especially Sloane Kelley, who I did not particularly like until reading this book. A solid book and A long time fan of the Mass Effect series I would definitely recommend reading it. If you have yet to play the new Mass Effect Andromeda I would recommend reading this first as it will make your game play experience more enjoyable as it provides more information on the characters you encounter in the game.

I would've preferred a bit more description of the Nexus station - perhaps a better explanation as to room layouts
This book actually managed to convince me to return to the Mass Effect: Andromeda game for which it serves as the prequel to.The writing of the novel is fairly successful. I would've preferred a bit more description of the Nexus station - perhaps a better explanation as to room layouts, hallway locations, etc - especially since this environment is ultimately visited in-game. I also would have liked a little more physical description of characters, since again, most of them are included in the game. Even things like describing accents would have made the transition from book to game so much more enjoyable. As far as alignment with the game, it's fairly close but not perfect. For example, the death of one character was described in the game as occurring "without awareness" - ie (without giving too much away) the character died in their sleep. However, in the book, a totally different set of events unfold which lead to the character's death. Also, the game provides a wildly different account of another character's involvement leading up to the uprising - so much in fact that discovering that backstory is a side quest within the game (and one I haven't finished just yet.) None of this is referenced in the book - we're led to distrust the character in the book, but the story as told in-game is far more complex and damming. All in all though, I enjoyed reading it, and I enjoy it even more for encouraging me to finish the $100+ investment that was Mass Effect: Andromeda.

all i can say that the author is very funny and story progression in the book is good
I am a huge mass effect fan, i already bought the game and was curious to know more about what happened before the pathfinder arrived at the nexus. It is hinted throughout the game of events that made certain characters who they are in the game. so i had to buy the book. English is my second language so i will not analyze how the book was written. I haven't finished the book yet, so without spoiling it for you, all i can say that the author is very funny and story progression in the book is good. Cant wait to finish the book :)
