The Art of Sports Photography

While sports enthusiasts will enjoy the breadth of subjects and sports
This is a stunning book. As a Times reader, I am familiar with the work of Mr Aspland whose name invariable appears under images that demand a second look - which is where I think photography moves from snap into the realm of art. While sports enthusiasts will enjoy the breadth of subjects and sports, the book should also appeal to anyone who appreciates photography where the boundaries are pushed. My favourite three are: the composition and light achieved in the diving child in an African township; the technical brilliance of the Olympic Sabre jousting where competitors are transformed into ethereal, will o' the wisps; and finally the sheer nerve, anticipation and pointy elbows of all great photographers in the ringside image of the brave but pole-axed Ricky Hatton.
