Making the familiar alien and the alien familiar
Review by John VesterThis is a lovely book. The words and illustrations are captivating. I simply drank it in.Read it for information. It is brimming with facts, as well as personal observations by the authors, Michael Carrroll and Rosaly Lopes, who went there on a National Science Foundation Writers and Artists Program grant. You’ll learn about the Antarctic continent and Mount Erebus, its active volcano, the history of Antarctic exploration, the logistics of being there and moving around and details of the Erebus caldera.Read it for inspiration. The authors seamlessly tie together the tangible continent under foot with the moons of the outer solar system, which we can experience here on Earth by exploring “analogs” such as the “harsh continent.”Soon, aided by the beautiful paintings of alien landscapes by Michael Carroll, I was soaring over the lava lakes on Io, the methane powdered hills of Titan, and past the ice towers of Enceladus, and the nitrogen plumes of Triton. The book is well researched, referenced and authoritative as a scientific treatise, but accessible to general audiences, which is why the NSF Writers and Artists Program exists.Reading this book, I had my mind expanded from the bottom of this world to the moons of the outer solar system.

A Great Adventure Story
A great adventure story of a trip to Antarctica. The real story of what it is like to travel to this fascinating place and why things are they way they are. A very good read!
