This title is a greatly expanded volume of the original Art and Science of Teaching , offering a competency-based education framework for substantive change based on Dr. Robert Marzano's 50 years of education research. While the previous model focused on teacher outcomes, the new version places focus on student learning outcomes, with research-based instructional strategies teachers can use to help students grasp the information and skills transferred through their instruction. Throughout the book, Marzano details the elements of three overarching categories of teaching, which define what must happen to optimize student learning: students must receive feedback, get meaningful content instruction, and have their basic psychological needs met. Gain research-based instructional strategies and teaching methods that drive student success: Explore instructional strategies that correspond to each of the 43 elements of The New Art and Science of Teaching , which have been carefully designed to maximize student engagement and achievement. Use ten design questions and a general framework to help determine which classroom strategies you should use to foster student learning. Analyze the behavioral evidence that proves the strategies of an element are helping learners reach their peak academic success. Study the state of the modern standards movement and what changes must be made in K-12 education to ensure high levels of learning for all. Download free reproducible scales specific to the elements in The New Art and Science of Teaching . Contents: Chapter 1: Providing and Communicating Clear Learning Goals Chapter 2: Conducting Assessment Chapter 3: Conducting Direct Instruction Lessons Chapter 4: Practicing and Deepening Lessons Chapter 5: Implementing Knowledge Application Lessons Chapter 6: Using Strategies That Appear in All Types of Lessons Chapter 7: Using Engagement Strategies Chapter 8: Implementing Rules and Procedures Chapter 9: Building Relationships Chapter 10: Communicating High Expectations Chapter 11: Making System Changes Review: Common sense support for all educators - 38 years in education has taught me one thing. You cannot and should not chase every new teacher's manual or theory that comes through without carefully vetting. However, even if you are not affiliated with a High Reliability Schools district, The Art and Science of Teaching will support your instruction. Do your students know the learning goal of each lesson? What do you want you want your students to know and be able to do? What are you going to do if they have not learned it? How soon do they get feedback? From classroom management and routines, to assessments and data collection, working in groups and in pairs. Marzano's book will provide a plethora of information and ideas for any teacher or administrator. Review: Great Refresher Course - I'm returning to the classroom after a five year break and this book is just what I needed to give me a quick review of everything important to know about teacher and student success. Prepare to highlight, underline, star, and make "To Do" lists as the chapters outline each teaching strategy concept in easy to understand charts and diagrams. And it wasn't a time consuming read as it just refreshed in my mind what I already knew!

Common sense support for all educators
38 years in education has taught me one thing. You cannot and should not chase every new teacher's manual or theory that comes through without carefully vetting. So many ideas!
Great read. Marzano gives 3 elements for every chapter, and there are about 10 suggestions for every element. It's great for teachers to see hundreds of practical ideas. If you take 3-4 ideas from this, it's worth it. That said, you'll inevitably disagree with several of Marzano's ideas - this isn't the Bible. He seems to advocate for boring lecture-based lessons and doesn't give attention to soft skills. But this book is still very valuable and I've already loaned it to another teacher.

A little dry
The prose was a little dry and I'm a bit disappointed at most of the citations being Marzano's own research, however this is a good collection of research-backed strategies and the student perspectives of their effects. One thing that is different about this book versus the older Art and Science of Teaching is that this one does not have all of these tables listing the research effect size of every strategy, it just tells you the strategies. However, I know that the core concepts are indeed based in educational research, I just wish that it was made more clear in this edition.

A Must-Read for All Educators!
This book is AMAZING! It provides such a wonderful overview of how to actually apply Marzano's strategies in the classroom in a clear and easy way! I gleaned so many strategies from this book and it challenged me to improve my daily practice in so many ways! This book introduced me to the use of proficiency scales and the best ways to teach both procedural and declarative content! I love this book!

You can use as much or as little as you like.
This book is easy to read and super helpful to me as a high school teacher. The tables make it very easy to see some simple strategies that will improve my instruction this fall. Yes, there is text that is kind of wordy and academic, but in terms of usefulness of the contents, those tables of strategies can't be beat. I feel they are "quick hits" where I can open up the book, pick a strategy, and use the very next day. These little things can make a big difference without a huge investment of time. Yes, overall in a perfect world you would overhaul your practice and implement each step like proficiency scales and so on- that would be great- but even if you don't have time for all that you can use this book. It is great for all teachers, whether you want to change a lot or just a little.

A true help for classroom teachers.
Robert Marzano's book, The new art and science of teaching, gives me more answers than it raises questions. What a refreshing read in the educational science continuum! I wish I had discovered it sooner.
