I see this receiver has a usb port. does it have usb read capability, for example to read and control playback of music files from a usb drive?

Yes. There is a usb port on the front and one on the back. You can choose either one as a source. It can play standard audio file formats like mp3, wma, wav, flac, m4a, etc. It will display the directory on a connected tv and can be controlled with the remote to move to and select the desired folder or song.

Can zone 2 be used for 2 additional height speakers? for dolby atmos? or would i need some type of 9.1, 9.2, etc. setup to use extra height speakers?

The instructions were very complicated for dual zones. We never did get it to work appropriately. Returned for a different brand
