A book I was wanting to read
The reviews of this book made me sure that I wanted to read it. As a gardener, I am interested in the history of gardening, not only among the wealthy and titled, but also among the majority whose names and gardens are unknown. This book is a history of the men who did the real work of gardening in England (where many of our gardening traditions and practices arose), beginning about 1800. Besides being informative, it is very well written. The reviews I had read were right.

A small but fascinating corner of history revealed
This is a most interesting book, and not only for those interested in gardening. Apart from Joseph Paxton, the stories of the gardening apprentices before and after their training at the the Horticutural Society's garden at Chiswick have indeed been untold but now are very well told and turn out to be widely dfferent but all fascinating, providing an insight not only to the men themselves but the attitudes and passions of their employers. Fluently written, it deserves a wider readsrhsip that just the gardening community.
