Are you Interested in Shogi (Japanese chess)? For English speakers who want to start Shogi, I wrote the following three topics in this book. Understanding the rules of Shogi Learning how to play Shogi and start today Learning some tips to become stronger The concept of this book is "You can start Shogi today" , so I introduced how to start playing Shogi right away on websites or apps. I also think that English speakers find it difficult to memorize Kanji(Chinese Characters) when learning Shogi. For this reason, I tried to explain Kanji simply in this book. I learned Shogi rules when I was seven years old when I barely knew any Kanji. So I believe that Kanji is not a big obstacle to learning the Shogi rules. Playing Shogi is a lot of fun, and I want people all over the world to know how interesting it is. I hope this book will encourage English speakers to start Shogi! Table of contents: Introduction Chapter 1 What is Shogi? Chapter 2 How to play Shogi Description of the board Promotion How to move and read pieces When a piece collides with another piece - Take or Stop Drop a piece Turn order - Sente(First player) and Gote(Second player) Notation - how to read Kifu Check Checkmate Threatmate and Brinkmate Draw rules Illegal move Ending game Summary of Chapter 2 Chapter 3 How to start Shogi from today PiyoShogi ShogiGUI 81 Dojo Lishogi Shogi Quest Shogi Wars Summary of Chapter 3 Chapter 4 How to become stronger Shogi strength - Dan and Kyu Value of pieces Strategy(Joseki) Tactics(Tesuji) Castle Checkmate Problem (Tsume Shogi) Brinkmate (hisshi) Summary of Chapter 4 Conclusion Review: Photocopy version - This is just a photocopy printing of the text. But its contents serves its purpose Review: Poorly written primer - Just skip this. Nothing here that you can't find online for free, and much better! For example, the blurb from the author mentions help in learning the Chinese characters used on traditional pieces. His suggestion: "Here is the character for [...]. Please memorize this character.", repeated over and over. Other parts are equally inane.

Great read and intro back into Shogi!
Iโve been playing shogi on and off for many years but never took it seriously. Just recently got back after seeing many modern progressions with the games access (many resources and online games like lishogi). This is great to get my feet wet again and better understanding of the game. This is the first of the series I finished and canโt wait to dive into the others.

Shogi Primer - basic reading
Book is written with a big font, so there is less material as someone expect from single count of pages, but everything what is in it is pretty clear and useful.

I am glad I bought this little masterpiece
I am very glad I bought this little masterpiece. Seigo Sato has written a very good book for those who are completely new to Shogi and want to learn it from the very scratch. The book starts (after intro chapter) with "How to play Shogi" and first takes a look at the board an pieces. Then he goes through every piece, how they move and what they will promote to when they reach your oponents first three rows. And also how they can move after they have been promoted. He continues with the rules like "when pieces collide", dropping pieces that has been promoted, board notation, checking the King and how to meet a check. Mate with different pieces, draw rules, how the game ends. You can also find good internet resources in the book where you can practice how to move the pieces with different move excercises and also play Shogi. He also writes about fundamental strategy , which is important to get right from the very beginning and how to become stronger in Shogi : - Value of pieces - Strategy - Tactics The book ends with some Shogi puzzles to solve, checkmate excercises and excercises like "By using the pawn and gold (Goldgeneral), capture the King in 3 moves". This book, written by Seigo Sato an amertour 3-dan Shogiplayer is the perfect place to start learning this interesting, Japanese chess like, game called Shogi. I highly recommend it to anyone who is new to Shogi. It will give you a sound and stable platform for furher improvement. Its cheap and its good. Dont hesitate to buy it if you are new to Shogi.
