How To Paint Characters The Marvel Studios Way

Doesn't quite deliver on the title.
It's unusual for me to not give Marvel Art book a 5 star review, but unlike the fantastic Art of the Movie books that Marvel produces to showcase the art for each new MCU film release, this doesn't deliver on what the title suggests. This book is not a guide to learn how to paint Marvel characters in the same style as the excellent work that is showcased in each individual MCU art book release. This book should really have been called the process and reasoning behind the Marvel art of the movie style.Don't get me wrong there is some fascinating insight from the extremely talented Visual Development team who have brought the characters from the comic book pages to our screens and in a very successful way, I hasten to add.If you want insight and tips on translating a character from page to screen, this book is great and the text ties the images together nicely. However if you are looking for a book to teach you the process of how to actually paint characters the Marvel way in possibly a step by step way, this book won't do that for you.You can check out my video preview to see if this book is right for you.

ESQUEÇA O TÍTULO DO LIVRO
Então, esqueçam passo a passo. Não é um livro que traz isso. Mas considerei um maravilhoso livro tanto visual como inspirador. Iniciantes e medianos da arte irão apreciar.

Not a Digital Painting Tutorial book
It is basically like the MCU art books but this is more of getting to know the artists and there process on designing the characters looks for the movies but there isn’t any step by step tutorials. I feel like a lot this information was used in other MCU art books except for maybe the only few decent sections are when they break down concepts of the Hulk with photos Mark Ruffalo side by side for the 3D models to design the facial features. You will see some concept art pieces broken down when they show the process. So I far I think I found one spread in the book with a break down but it’s just images and they don’t explain how they did it. I don’t think this book was worth $50. You are getting more out the MCU art movie books. In the MCU art books you at least get story boards, characters, weapons, vehicles, and environment concept art. This book is more on character design process which is great but no step by step tutorials which is what I was looking for when they announce this book. If you want to buy it I would watch reviews of people flipping through it online before you buy it to make sure it’s want you are looking for to be honest. I’m disappointed because it wasn’t what I was looking for since a lot that information I could of just gotten from the other MCU art books.

Not at all what the title suggests
"How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way" was one of my favorite books growing up. It distilled a lot of practical information about drawing -- not just drawing comics, but DRAWING -- into a format that was both super instructive but also tuned to the medium (at the time). The title suggest that this book is an expansion on that idea, but leveraging the (admittedly fantastic) work already done for preproduction on other MCU movies. Instead, it feels like a marketing exec's way to squeeze more dollars from existing assets. It features illustrations (again, good ones) that appear in lots of other "art of" books about MCU movies, but augmented simply by descriptions from the talented production team. Save the money. If you want to see production illustrations from Endgame, buy the Endgame book. If you want to learn technique and production tips and tricks from talented industry experts (as with the excellent book on which this title was based), look elsewhere.

Haven't read much of it yet but Still a Bit of a Bummer
Like I said in the headline I haven't read much of it yet, haven't had the time but theres plenty to read and I'm sure it's insightful (I truly mean that, not trying to sound sarcastic). However my biggest reason to buy this was to see the art and the process and it's lacking that for a 'How to' book. Which is why it's a bit of a bummer. I felt like it needed more art, more pictures of the process, sketches, designs that didn't make the cut for the movies and why, and I don't know if it's just my copy but the pictures seemed to be printed a bit dark in color than they are supposed to be. Not to say there isn't some very cool art in this book because all the MCU art is cool but if your looking for a lot of it, it's not here. Also, this is on me for not reading the size of the book but it's kinda small, a little bit smaller than a sheet of paper. All in all, it's not a bad book. Do I wish I'd waited to see reviews and pictures of the inside? Yeah. But I'd recommend it for someone who is more interested in reading than studying actual artwork and the process but wait for it to go on sale.
