Will this protect a solid wood table from spills?

Only temporarily- this has no plastic or rubber to repel liquids. This tablecloth is absorbent, so depending on what spills, and how much, would determine the ability to protect your table. I make my family use coasters for drinks on it.

I bought one that said it was 60" x 84" Oval but is 60" x 120" and rectangular, not even close. Not returning, just warning others?

I didn't have that problem, ordered rectangular and received correct size.
