When I opened the box, I was pleasantly surprised. This is a nice set of paints with a good range of core paint colours, such as Burnt Umber, Crimson Red, Ultramarine, Cerulean Blue, Mid Yellow and the like. All in all, a good range to get the budding artist painting that green field horizon, or a stormy sky over the sea. Even for just painting a stone white and slapping a smiley face on it, this set does the trick.The box contains a useful palette, a small piece of thin canvass – really just a wrapped piece of board, and a set of 5 brushes. The paints dispensed from the tubes well, and mixed with each other and had reasonable density and cover. These are not Windsor and Newton, but they are reasonable.Ok. So, you all know to ignore the marketing hype attached to products by now? The brushes are not ‘Professional’ quality, far from it. For that you will pay the same for one brush as you did for the whole of this kit. The brushes are slightly scruffy, and one or two not even very straight and the odd hair hanging out – see the pictures. For trying out the kit, or getting going on that pebble painting project with the little ones, these will do just fine. For anyone getting the painting bug, after trying these, you will probably need to get some better brushes. The box had a mark across the top, which was a shame, but no doubt it could be swapped out if this was a gift. If you just want to open the kit and get dabbing some paint, then it’s no big deal.
