There are two types of Gear Tape. This is fabric repair tape that does not come with it. The tenacious tape does come with a case.

Q: Would the "ripstop nylon" or "nylon fabric" be best to repair a heavy-duty tarp?

I would go with the nylon fabric but it might depend on what material the tarp is made of. The 'ripstop' nylon is typically very thin and light weight (think the outer material of most down jackets). Gear Aid makes great stuff hope you can find something.
