I haven't read a historical romance novel in some time but because of liking the author I chose to take a chance. Well, I'm very glad I did‼ The story takes place in mid 1400's. The heroine Gwenyth is about 18 & hero Aric about 28. The young age of Gwenyth coupled with her parents dieing while she's just a young child and her aunt and uncle treating her like a servant leads to emotional immaturity & insecurity at times. However, it's understandable since she is cast out of the family castle to marry an assumed sorcerer. Aric keeps many secrets from Gwendylen & living as an outcast from family & village is quite a bleak picture to merely accept because Aric is "nice." They both dance around each other as well as towards each other. They are both lacking in open communication & have their own insecurities, therefore fall prey to significant misunderstandings during this unstable time in history & therefore daily life. *The plot is well developed with twists & turns, historical references understood, and characters relatable & realistic.* I NEVER found this book boring! I can't wait for book #2 to continue to read about this time period & how relationships prevailed despite unstable times. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

I don't read a lot of historical romances but I love Shayla Black so I downloaded a sample and after reading it I was hooked and bought the entire series I couldn't put them down.

Really enjoyed this series

I absolutely enjoyed this amazing story of Aric and Gwenyth. I'm a sucker for a good highland story and this book gave me everything needed to keep me turning the pages to see what would happen next. Aric had seen enough death and lies for political gain that he could take. He made a decision for himself to end his part in it all. He was living in a small cottage to be at peace. That peace was destroyed when he is basically forced to wed Gwenyth to save her life. He didn't want to take a wife but with no choice but to save her life he took on this fiery woman but tried to keep his distance. When Aric gets summoned back to the one place he's avoided their lives change from simple to complicated. The author did a great job of telling their story. It is full of the pressures of the times and set up a beautiful story of love. I enjoyed the secondary characters and their role in this story. Highly recommend.

I really loved this book, very interesting characters with a lovely storyline which was a bit different to the usual. I love it when you get to meet a series of characters that carry on through other books. I recommend this book very well written.
