One of the best books in the YA Science Fiction Genre in recent times!
(I voluntarily reviewed a physical copy of the book for For The Love of Fictional Worlds)HOLY FREAKING SHEEZ! I. AM. SPEECHLESS.This was utterly the most fascinating & exhilarating ride I have been on with a book in the recent times!Otherworld is brilliantly deceptive in its execution – when you start off with the book, you go in with the assumption that this is going to be one of those normal, predictable yet an adventure filled book – but once you start off, boy, oh boy, you get sucked in like you are swirling down in a whirlpool!Otherworld falls in the science fiction genre – but that is just a facet of what this book actually is! What the authors have done is that they have taken everything that is normal about our own world and added in a bit extra; and not just any extra but something that could already be happening and none of would have been aware about it – a virtual reality that could be sucking in life forms and we wouldn’t know it, for it has become a new normal for us – online role playing games, video games, etc (I am not a gamer girl, I think, that’s very obvious!).We would honestly be blind as bats while this soon becomes the normal reality for us!Told in the POV of Simon Eaton; Otherworld is a refurbished version of an old video game (ORPG, maybe?) which is the only way he can apparently connect with this best friend, his only friend in the whole wide world – Kat Foley. When he realises there is something significantly wrong with Kat’s life, with her behaviour, with her home; trouble that he realises she is protecting him from; he goes into overdrive – and the plot evolves in ways that plot twists keep on coming and you keep on reading! The plot is a roller-coaster ride – no other way to describe it – it volleys between the real and the virtual world smoothly and effortlessly. This makes it very easy to become engrossed in the plotline; and I ended up forgetting my real life – which trust me is a balance that is quite hard to achieve, and the authors did a fan – freaking – tastic job of it!You know I am hardcore fan of dual POV – but in this case – just Simon’s POV works dazzlingly as well. I adored Simon – he is an arrogant, frustrating, but he was terrifyingly normal ‘cause he was relatable, in all the ways that a teenage boy could be. But it was his strong loyalty to Kat that endeared me to him for life!SO, TRUST ME, WHEN I TELL YOU, YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK! If there is one book on your TBR; let it be this one; especially if you adore the YA Science Fiction Genre!

Very enjoyable read for my 12 year old son.
I'm always looking for new books for my 12 year old son to read as he reads so quickly and has read all the obvious recommendations including maze runner, hunger games etc... We enjoyed ready player one and other reviews seemed to liken this book to it so thought we'd give this a try. My son says it is "very good" and is definitely suitable for a 12 year old. We will probably be giving the other books in the series a try next.

An action- packed adventure involving gamers!
This book was such an action packed adventure that I couldn't seem to stop reading because I wanted to know what would happen next.I am not much of a gamer so I wasn't sure how'd I'd like the book but in fact I really enjoyed it and the virtual reality aspect really enhanced the book!Imagine a game where you can feel, smell and taste all that's to be had without having to physically go anywhere nor having to spend lots of money to travel? That's the basis of a prototype for new technology from Otherworld and it could open the doors to so many limited by their body constraints particularly those who are paralyzed or disabled. It all sounds wonderful and too good to be true. Well that's because it is and most of the people testing the beta don't realize they're the lab rats and some of them are dying because they're mind is tricked into thinking Otherworld is real and when injured in the game, it can have disastrous consequences.Simon is a gamer who is excited to test the new headsets from Otherworld and it's the only way he can seem to see Kat because she refuses to see him in real life. When his Dad destroys his gear because he took $6000 out of his parents' account to be able to play this new version, he decides to follow Kat around in person and try to learn why she's been acting so strange. One night he follows her to an abandoned place who is there with a group of kids and watches in horror as the first floor where everyone is but him collapses and kills two kids while injuring others including Kat who he manages to save when she starts bleeding from an injury. Following her to the hospital after someone called the ambulance, he learns that she has developed Locked In Syndrome from her accident and may never recover. Then he finds out there's a way she can live through virtual reality with a strange disc attached to the back of her skull. Simon would much rather have her back in real life and soon learns that this virtual reality could have a sinister motive behind it.Simon is in a race against the clock to find out what's really going on, trying to save Kat and when he finally manages to get his own disk, learns that sometimes the latest technology has the potential to kill you.On his journey to find Kat in Otherworld, he makes friends along the way including a guide, an ogre with a sense of humor, a knight and a soccer Mom. Meeting unexpected help along the way thanks to Kat, he's determined to get to the bottom of what's going on and trying not to get killed in world by raging buffalo, The Children (creatures born of an Elemental and another being), save Kat and find the Creator before any one else has to suffer.Full of adventure, friendship, humor (the orgy comment by the Ogre still cracks me up), the power of love and a crazy dose of virtual reality. I'm so glad that I got a chance to read this book and I hope the next book will be released soon!

Not RP1, not by a long shot yet still entertaining
This book was a page turner for sure but.... a far cry to say that it feeds the craving for another novel like RP1. There are no real pop culture references and doesn’t relate to any decade like RP1 fed off everything great that came out of the 80s and decades surrounding it. Sure it literally has VR headsets and hipatic gear but that’s about the extent of its “likeness” to RP1. It felt like a coming of age story wrapped up in futuristic tech with a murder mystery feel mixed in. Once I got past the fact that it’s not RP1 or anything resembling it I enjoyed and it found it at times difficult to put down. Enough so that I’ll probably purchase the sequel as I would like to know what happens to the protagonists. If you like fiction novels based in a possible future reality that explores what happens when giant tech companies take things too far for greed or their twisted view of the good for mankind.... then buy this book. Worth the price albeit feeling swift and short.
