Poor quality and uneven baking
I needed this pan for a special occasion cake. As soon as I received it, I washed it, lightly towel dried, and placed it on a drying rack. The next morning it was covered with rust dots. I re-washed, hoping the rust was topical, to no avail. A new pitted pan. Oh joy! I cleaned it as best I could and used it today. Because it was a small 12 x 6 pan and my recipe was for two 9 inch pans, I used half of the batter in this penguin pan and half in a 9 inch round . The round baked perfectly in 35 minutes at 350. I'm 15 minutes past that on the penguin and the cake tester in the center is still wet. The edges have now risen slightly over the top and are, I'm afraid, going to be dry and crispy for this "fudgy cake" recipe. The cake is done on the outside but not in the middle. I wish I had never used it and had returned it. What a bad buy!(follow-up note - with 20 minutes of additional baking time, the cake was finally done, which I do understand because of the different depth of the cake - just be prepared. I was able to slice off the "over-rise" but my biggest problem, despite even spreading of the batter, the head/neck did not rise as much as the body and it baked uneven. Still not a happy baker! Do not recommend this poorly constructed pan...rusts inordinately easy and poor heat conductivity which results in uneven baking)

Who doesn't love Penguin-shaped cake?!
Excellent penguin cake pan and my cakes look like cute penguins! The cakes come out perfect every time (i.e. it doesn't break apart into pieces when removing cake from the cake pan). The markings are visible enough to use as outlines when you ice the cake. I love Penguins and this cake pan was a "must-have" for my kitchen. If your friend/family member/loved one loves penguins, this would make a great and fun gift idea for them! If they aren't into baking, buy it yourself and bake them a Penguin-cake for them :)

Great for someone who loves penguins....
My son loves penguins and wanted a penguin cake for his birthday. Great. Should be easy, right? Doesn't Wilton have every imaginable cake mold? Um, no....at least not penguins. Okay, next idea. Check Amazon! They have everything! And yes, they even had a penguin mold. Only problem - it's imported, and I can't read the instructions. But honestly, who needs instructions? You pour the cake mix into the mold, bake it as usual, turn it out, and decorate it. Except....my prototype wouldn't come out in one, two, or even three pieces. So...I tried again and succeeded.Seriously, the mold is fine. All I really needed to know ahead of time, which I will now tell you, is that you need to fill the pan with about half to two-thirds of box cake mix (in the US, anyway - no guarantees for anywhere else). It looks like it might not be enough, but it will. Then it bakes more evenly, and it might even come out of the pan without breaking. (My second attempt still broke the neck, but that was easily fixed with some frosting.) You'll have to cut off the dome-like belly so that it will lay flat, but you have to do that with every cake in a mold. I still couldn't read the instructions for things like frosting recipes or what cake decorating tips to use for which parts, but that really doesn't matter. Use your favorite frosting, and use the photo as a guide for what areas to make in what color and in texture vs smooth. Turned out great, and my son thinks I'm awesome. Win-win!

It's alright - Serves its purpose
My BF really likes penguins so for our anniversary I wanted to make him a penguin cake. It took me a little longer to bake the cake than the recommended time on the box because it wasn't ready around the belly when I tested it with a knife (probably needed about an extra 10 minutes). It broke at the neck when I flipped it over to remove it but it wasn't noticeable once I added some frosting to it.I've made this cake quite a few times since then with the same problems with I don't consider it much of an issue. I don't have the same issue as a few of the other reviewers about sharp edges, maybe they changed something in their processing? The material itself is cheap, unlike some of the higher end baking stuff so I am starting to see some rust showing up in some parts of it :(

it worked out great for the occasional
We bought this penguin cake pan for our sons sixth birthday and it was a huge hit. Although it was not quite as big as I expected it to be, it worked out great for the occasional. The ordering process was completely painless and it arrived very quickly. I would highly recommend this pan if you have a penguin fan in your family and if you do not need a very large cake.
