If these are run in air purifier mode specifically, do they help with smells e.g. cooking, pets?

I'm not sure as I got the large one. Mine does and I think the 12L will do the same if it has the air purifier. I wouldn't be without mine. In this hot weather we had this summer I had it on 24/7 and had to empty it every day, that's 20L. I hate humidity so it saved me lol. Your house will always smell fresh with one of these. My electricity bill was hardly any different to usual so all good. Hope this helps.

How much does it cost to run constantly per day please?

MeacoDry Arete One 12L costs approx 6p an hour in full humidifying mode but it reduces to about 1p per hour when humidity is achieved whilst the fan simply purs in the background monitoring the unit. In other words it's a game changer and super economical.

How effective would this be in a basement that can be around 8 degrees?

Worth trying. The dehumidifier should come on less often as one kept at a higher temperature because in warmer temperatures the air holds more moisture than cooler temperatures. Hence ‘relative humidity’.

What is the room size limit for this 12L dehumidifier? 100m2?

I don't know but we have a 3 bed bungalow and it works ok here.
