RecotonFiber Optic Toslink to 3.5mm Mini Adapter

Excellent, cheap. Don't spend 5x the cost on any other solution.
Apart from the fact that it took 2 weeks to receive the weightless miniature adapter (maybe it was the Hurricane), I am extremely pleased with this item.For $2, I get surround sound from my S/PDIF output, which is converted into a Toslink cable. This allows me to use my Astro A40 mixamp with Dolby Digital sound through my laptop's S/PDIF-out, or output true surround sound from my laptop to any 5.1 system, TV, or any optical-in for that matter. Just don't forget the optical cable. :)That's about it. Don't waste $10-15 on other solutions. This is what you need to turn any regular S/PDIF-out (or combo 3.5mm slot) into a digital optical output at lossless quality.Just make sure you need a S/PDIF output converted to an optical cable. I don't want anyone to order the incorrect/backwards adapter and waste 2 weeks for nothing (like that one guy who did).PS. If you don't have S/PDIF, I don't believe you can achieve an optical connection in a regular 3.5mm slot using this adapter. While this is a "3.5mm" mini adapter, the regular 3.5mm/speaker slot on a given computer does NOT output Toslink red light, so there is nothing to adapt/convert to begin with. So technically speaking, this is a S/PDIF(male) to Toslink(female) adapter. If you might not have S/PDIF, or just aren't sure, simply look for a 3.5mm-sized output glowing an ominous red light somewhere on your computer. That means you are ready to convert S/PDIF red light to Toslink red light using this adapter.Hoped this helped somewhat!

Perfect; if it's what you need
If this is what you need, then it's the perfect solution. I thought it might be helpful to provide some details of what my need was and how these little items fulfilled it. I searched reviews looking for someone that tried what I was looking to do with these, but didn't see any so maybe this will help someone in the same boat I was in.I purchased and installed an Apple AirPort Express for the sole purpose of streaming iTunes to my A\V Receiver. I am replacing a clunky HTPC that has proven just to difficult for my family to operate. While I'm not a fan of iTunes, there's just no (easy) way around it when everyone in your house owns some flavor of iPod. Anywho, the goal was to go digital from the AirPort to the A\V Receiver. Mistakenly, I purchased a Digital Coax cable to use with the product, only discovering later that (apparently) the AirPort supports only Digital Optical. I already had the Digital Optical cable with Toslink connectors on both ends. Obviously, the AirPort requires a Mini connection. I hated to shell out the $20-$30 for a Toslink-to-Mini cable, so I searched and found these converters. I bought four of them (in an attempt to help justify the shipping to myself). I was concerned about the proper fit on the Mini connection after reading some the reviews, but decided to take a chance. I'm happy to report that they fit perfectly on both ends and everything is working wonderfully. They did arrive with a protective cover over the Mini Optical plug. They were packaged in a bubble wrap envelope, but nothing appeared to be damaged.If this is what you are looking to do and you already have a cable then I think this product will fit your needs perfectly.

Good product. Slow shipping.
This is a good product and it works well. I needed it to determine my if DVR recorded and optically transmitted Dolby 5.1 sound (it does). I would have given this 5 stars, but it was in (surface) transit 13 Nov to 11 Dec from Germany. Had I realized that, I might have made an effort to buy it locally, but with my AMAZON card, it was "free".

works fine... now
got the adapter and it would not work. I kept looking and trying to figure out why and low and behold there was something deep inside it that was in the way of the light. It looked like a piece of the plastic or something. must not have been totally shaved off or something. got a pen and was able to get rid of the blockage. works great now.used on an apple airport express for streaming itunes

Clean Connection for my Mac Mini
The Recoton Fiber Optic Toslink to 3.5mm Mini Adapter worked flawlessly (and continues to work flawlessly). I had designs to set up a mac mini to a dual purpose monitor/tv fit for monitor purpose. Space was limited in my place and I did not want to have to worry about housing two separate systems in the house, one for computer and another for entertainment. Just too much. It took a little investigative work to determine all the pieces that I needed. I even took a trip or two to a local electronics retail giant and ended up getting bad parts and shoddy advice on what was needed for my setup. I was able to navigate some nerds sites on the web and found exactly the pieces I needed and ordered from Amazon. It took a couple days longer to get the parts, but in the long run, it was worth the wait to secure good pieces.Pros:The Toslink adapter never failed. I still have it, even after altering my setup in a larger space.The Toslink adapter seated properly and snuggly. No loose fit or slips to worry about. I did not have to worry about the Toslink accidentally being pulled from the unit.The connection was clean. I mean squeaky clean, no noise or distortion issues to worry about, which is exactly what I was looking for.Cons:Not a single one I can think of, other than not being able to buy it locally. It was worth the wait.When in doubt, go for the gold when looking for a clean and high end contact. I would recommend the Recoton Fiber Optic Toslink to 3.5mm mini adapter to anyone looking to connect their mac. I would definitely buy again if I needed to, but it still works 5 years on, so I shouldn't have to buy another one! Much luck with your own hook ups;
