Artist Woodless Pure Charcoal Pencils - Ultra Soft and Dark – 6pc Set Equivalent to 28+ Regular Pencils – Smooth Consistency on All Drawing Papers

Just received today, so haven't worked with this product extensively. However, I'm very familiar with dry media materials and so far the results of my trials are consistent with any decent compressed charcoal. While lines are, indeed, difficult or even impossible to remove or even to mitigate, again they work predictably within the expectations of compressed charcoal and can be manipulated with a paper stump, tortillon, chamois or art sponge and most, if not all marks can be erased with a good vinyl, kneadable or gum eraser. My only regret is that this set doesn't include pencils of a hard consistency, which is indispensable for crisp, clean, smudge-resistant lines when they are needed.. The set comes VERY well packaged, all of mine arrived whole and intact. The individual pencils might possibly break if dropped - a hexagonal barrel would prevent rolling - but I just try to remember to handle them with this in mind, which isn't difficult since almost all art materials require a certain degree of respect, either to safeguard the integrity of the material or for the sake of safety. Easy to use, easy to sharpen, a little shorter than the last brand I have been using, but are thicker and more comfortable in the hand. The real advantages of these, and of compressed charcoal in general, include that these pencils aren't nearly as delicate as vine charcoal and they are capable of laying down truly black marks, very dense consistency and more even application. I often apply charcoal to my drawing tools rather than directly to paper, which is a LOT easier without a wood casing. But probably the most important factor for both the hobbyist and working artist is that this is a very good value, a lot of bang for the buck and capable of delivering professional quality results - the only limitations are in how hard you're willing to work to learn and improve your skills. May we all be very fortunate in this quest!

This is the best charcoal pencil I've used in 40 years. It's soft and very black to the paper, yet it doesn't crack or crumble. It's easy to sharpen with a little manual sharpener and doesn't break while sharpening. It's just perfect.

I finally found some really soft and malleable compressed charcoal, it smudges easily and has very fine structure, yet sticks well to the paper, makes some perfect velvety blacks. There is also a perceivable difference between the different hardnesses. I like it very much.

Love this. This is the darkest black you can find. They don’t smudge like charcoal which is what I was looking for.

I have been waiting to get these for a long time! I'm so glad they're finally available, and much higher quality than I expected. Rich dark color, extra soft quality and so much more charcoal than a regular pencil, without getting your hands as dirty as with a woodless pencil. The case is cute and compact, easy to take with you anywhere. I will probably never buy any other type again!

Arrived a day late but in very good condition. The tray holds the pencils tight and no pencils were broken. They are nice charcoal pencils, smooth and blendable. I prefer woodless charcoal pencils , easier to sharpen and I can save the shavings in a jar for later use. I would buy again unless the price goes too high. I know it says you can use any sharpener but I have had previous experience with other woodless pencils and I recommend a good hand held sharpener.
