Give this pen a try!
I own 5 Jinhao x750 pens and only paid $5 each for them and they are wonderful pens so I hoped this 992 would be the same level of quality. It is plastic and I doubt it will last forever like the metal Jinhaos will but it wrote smoothly from the beginning and felt nice in my hand. So much thinner and lighter than the x750's. The "chrome" accents are just shiny silver plastic so they might show the wear first. It is a good starter pen for someone wanting to try out fountain pens for the first time. The piston was smooth from the start. I haven't paid more than $30 yet for a single fountain pen (I've bought about 30 in the last 6 months looking for the perfect pen) and some of those Lamy pens required tuning of the nib before they wrote smoothly but the Jinhao all were perfect from the start..... there is a chance that some of the zLamy's aren't authentic Lamy's so I won't fault that company. Give this a pen a try. It is fun, smooth and cheap enough that if you lose it or give it away you can afford to replace it.

SHOCKINGLY GOOD
I have a wide array of fountain pens and this one popped up in my feed while I was shopping for ink. I picked it up because the price was right for a "cheap pen to keep at the office." I wasn't expecting much. But for $8, this is a VERY good pen! It's comfortable and lightweight. The nib is a little beefier than I tend to like (I think it's a medium and I like a fine), but for $8, who cares? The ink took a little longer than anticipated to start flowing, but once it did, this became a great pen that easily keeps up with my Parkers and Twisbi. I might not ever spend more than $8 for a pen again. You probably shouldn't either, now that you know this one is out there! I'm probably going to pick up a couple more just to keep some extra colors loaded! Only reason it's 4 stars instead of 5 is that I wish I could've picked a finer nib, but otherwise, it's outstanding!

Excellent Jinhao Quality!
Excellent Jinhao Quality! What else is there to say? It's a Jinhao, which (IMO) translates to value pricing and a good performing instrument. This smaller pen should not be underestimated. It's pretty to look at, leaves a wet enough line, and just writes really smoothly. The <F> nib writes just a touch to the <M> side, which is more in line with my preference. If you're expecting a japanese <F>, this isn't it. Think more japanese <M>, but not as far as a western <M>. These are so cheap, how can you not have one in every color? Cheap enough as giveaways, or when teaching a younger writer about fountain pens. BTW.... There's an o-ring where the barrel and section thread together. It looks like this could work out for an eyedropper style conversion. Must try it out.

A great pen, a bit broad for a medium but soooo smooth and I love the gold trim.
Don't think that because a pen is made in the orient that it is low quality. Jinhao makes some really good writing fountain pens at an exceedingly reasonable price. I'm a fountain pen devotee and I have a bunch of these. Many are perfection right out of the box. Note: I insist on a smooth nib and if there is any feedback, and there often is with a lot of fountain pens, I gently smooth them with a fine grade buffing pad till they are like I want. You can get those pads on Amazon and they will come in real handy. First check that your nib times are even. If they are then ink up the pen and buff lightly on the finest grade buffing pad in many directions. I highly recommend Jinhao pens if you can't spend a lot of money.

It won't refill
After the first filling, it only refills to about 20% of the volume. Both the first one that I ordered, and the one they sent me to replace the first one.

Do not turn into an eyedropper
Very light, writes smoothly, and the piston is very easy to use. The only problem is that it has developed cracks at the bottom of the pen. It's still usable but definitely don't turn this one into an eyedropper.

Jinhao 992, Transparent, has some toothiness, for those who prefer pens that have feedback.
Jinhao 992, Transparent: Flush clean the pen and let the Section dry overnight before initially inking the pen. Or submerge the NIB section into the ink until the Converter starts to suck up the ink and repeat emptying and filling the Converter 10 times; then wipe the excess ink from the Section and NIB. Always flush the pen between inkings, and try not to remove the NIB after the pen writes perfectly, but do remove the NIB and follower if you start to experience problems after awhile since some inks can clog the Feed Follower Feed grooves and then you will experience hard starts, skipping, etc. Or leave the Section submerged in cleaning fluids for at least 24 hours. If you start to experience problems you should probably switch to a wet flowing ink, like Aurora Black, Monteverde Horizon Blue, or Sailor inks, like Sailor Yamadori, etcetera, and stay away from Shimmering or Pigment based inks. This sample Jinhao 992 #5 Fine NIB is really a Medium, hardly distinguisable from the Jinhao X450 #6 Medium NIB. "Luck of the draw" - my Jinhao X750 #6 Medium NIB sample writes like a Fine-Medium, which I find I prefer. The 992 writes smoothly, albeit with a slight "draggy" feeling (some find "toothiness", or "feedback" desirable), much like the Lamy Medium NIB. The pen doesn't dry out overnight when stored NIB pointing straight up, has no hard starting, false starting, skipping nor blobbing (which is caused by a trapped air bubble bursting through). The Converter supplied with the Jinhao 992 is superior to the Jinhao Converter supplied with the Jinhao X450 or X750, so it is useable. The Jinhao 992 must NOT be stored verically with the NIB pointing straight down as ALL the ink will drain down into the cap and will get onto the nut behind the liner, and if not throughly cleaned the ink will likely cause the chromed nut to corrode. The Cap liner cannot be removed. If you remove the small end-cap of the Cap be prepared to have a tough time getting it to fit back on tightly; after screwing down the cap as far as possible the clip will continue to rotate, so thereafter you will have to apply upwards pressure on the clip while tightening the small cap down. A dental "Water Pick" helps to clean under the cap liner. The Cap must be allowed to dry throughly afterwards; 'Canned Air' helps to force most of the water from underneath the Liner. The pen will start to dry out in less than 60 seconds when left uncapped. Shame. (By way of comparison, the Faber-Castell Loom, or Lamy Al-Star, can be left uncapped for over 5 minutes and it will not dry out.) You will be habitually capping and uncapping the pen between ruminations, made more cumbersome because it is a threaded cap instead of a snap cap. If, however, you prefer threaded caps to snap caps this should not pose a problem, but just make sure you Silicone Grease the threads regularly, least you overtighten and cause it to crack. The NIB Unit unscrews from the Section, making it easier to thoroughly clean the Section, after first removing the NIB and then the Feed Follower. Be careful not to lose the two O-rings in the Section when thoroughly cleaning; apply a light coat of Silicone GREASE to the NIB Unit threads before re-installing into the Section to help prevent cross-threading and to provide a complete seal. The Section does not have hard to clean, ink trapping, ink staining, recesses. The Jinhao 992 is on the smaller size; and even with the Section grip at about 9mm in width, it can still be tiring after awhile. The Cap posts fine and the pen balances better when posted. Apply just enough pressure to the Cap so that the Cap doesn't rattle when the pen is lightly shaken. Hopefully the small barrel-end cap will not crack like the Jinhao 992 of years past. The Jinhao 992 is moderately wet (but is not a "Juicy" pen) and will probably write wetter with a wet ink and drier with a dry ink. The pen drying out in under 60 seconds made my decision to seldom use it easy; ymmv.
