Hearts in Suspension

Nostalgic!
Like many people, I expect, I had already read Hearts in Atlantis and had never heard of most or all of the other contributors, so I bought this book for King's own new content. It did not disappoint. His memoir of the 60s and early 70s, especially for someone who remembers them, is beautiful--and induces quite a bit of nostalgia and a little bit of sadness--but the hard times we survived have a certain glow that comes through very clearly here. Wonderful to read.

An oddly inspiring retrospective
I'd already read HEARTS IN ATLANTIS years ago, and so was intrigued by this further foray into Stephen King's (and his former classmates' and teacher's) reminiscensces of the late 60s on and around the UMO campus. I was amazed to see King mention his ex-girlfriend, "Maureen B." -- I worked with her brother, Brian B. about 25 years ago, who related to me his own memories of meeting King in 1968 at around the age of 12, and King playing "Kumbaya" on his guitar...among other anecdotes. As a self-publishing author here on Amazon myself, and having met Steve King very briefly, twice (at UMO in October, 1996; and again in Vermont in December, 2009 -- with fellow author John Irving), I'm always inspired and amazed by tales of his early life and writing efforts, early short story sales, and what life was like as a young undergraduate writer struggling against all odds in the crazy, uncertain times of the Vietnam era. HEARTS IN SUSPENSION is a superb recollection of the era and circumstances King metaphorically calls "Atlantis." I highly recommend it to writer and non-writer alike, whether you love Stephen KIng's work and career, and/or if you're just interested in what the late 1960s was like, on and off campus, in rural Maine.

Classmates
I attended the University of Maine the same four years that Steve King did. I knew who he was but he did not know who I was (I believe). Regardless, the book was a delight to me, bringing back mostly pleasant memories of those intense four years.

King and 60's protests
This is an interesting book about the late 60's early 70's. King was in college and it is written by him and others. I remember the time, worth reading we need to learn how protests got us out of Vietnam.

Great read. More insight into SK's thoughts and life
Great read. More insight into SK's thoughts and life. Most interesting!! Of course, is there anything written by SK, either fiction or non-fiction that is not worth reading?!!

A must-read for UMO students of the sixties !!
I attended the University of Maine at Orono during the years that Stephen King was there. I remember him well - although I didn't know him personally, I did know some of the people who contributed to this book. Loved reading about those days from their point of view!

Hearts in Suspension is a must have for Stephen King fans.
Excellent, an insight to the young Stephen King. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it, with all the essays from the others, but I did! It brings back the turbulence of the 60s, mostly anti war (Vietnam), Kent State and the like, but also the confusion of a Nation not at peace with the government. So apropos with what we are seeing today. Not that they are compared in any way shape or form, just that as I read, my mind kept wandering into that realm.
