Q: So, is it 3/16" (4.76 mm) or 5 mm (3.15/16)? It matters if one is using it to square a through mortise cut using a 3/16" spiral up-cut router bit.

I have 4 Narex chisels, three have their width marked in mm, one is marked 1/2" and measures 12,75 mm or 0.5 in, if that is any help. According to the Amazon page for the mortise chisels, they are all marked in mm, and the page says "4 to 5 mm", I would assume that their width is in mm.

Q: Why are the grinds tapered? The back face is wider than the front face by almost 1/32" and the sides are convex and get narrower towards the handle.

I think to make it easier to pry out the waste from the mortise.

Q: I found online reviews that say these 'twist' as they cut (they don't cut straight) - Anyone find this a problem?

I have two mortising chisels of this brand and neither one will twist as they cut. I would suggest checking the squareness of edge and faces.

The mortising chisels (1/4 and 5/8" widths) are 11.750 in total length. The blade is half the total length.
