I Almost Forgot About You: A Novel

Terry—What Happened?
I always LOVE novels by this author and this one started out promising but the long awaited train ride her character Georgia Young awaited to take derailed at best and at worst was just a plain wreck. It seemed like the author felt she needed to throw in every politically correct character type in this novel in a weird attempt to appeal to her readers: lesbian neighbors, coming out of the closet son in law, nympho friend, wild and free employee, business partner dealing with elder issues, etc. Add to that her main character (Georgia Young) dealing with her own aging and her strange idea of revisiting most of her previous romantic relationships which began as a rather intriguing proposition but quickly turned confusing. I felt like I needed a score card to keep up with “who’s who” as the chapters churned along. It also seemed ridiculous that just about every former lover of Georgia Young thought she was the “sexy black diva who got away.”The dialogue between Stan the White Guy (another lover who could not get over her since college days) and Georgia was dull and not believable. The fist bumps between them and “very cool” comments were childish and just plain silly. From a woman who has previously kept us captivated with salty, witty and entertaining characters, this effort fell very short of the mark of excellence she has achieved with her previous novels.

Like Dr. Georgia Young
Like Dr. Georgia Young, I found myself on a mission. She was trying to find herself and I was trying to find a way to connect with the characters and the plotline. I'm still lost!

Love this writer but not the book
I have read all of her books. This one was too slow and boring.I like that she makes her characters feel real, but the story just wasn't enough to keep me reading. I finished the book because I wanted to challenge myself, but I skipped boring paragraphs.

GREATEST in a long time.... MORE MORE
I am a Terry McMillan fan and have been since Mama in paper back. I was so glad that she had a new read out I pre-ordered mine and read it from cove to cover.. I don't think there are enough words to describe this book it was great it makes me think so much about my friends and the bay area. It also should help anyone enjoy the differences in their friendships and enjoy each other. I bought two as gifts to my friends. Thank you Terry M

The Worst!
I have always been a huge fan of T.M. so it pains me to say how awful this book was. The main character was shallow and uninteresting. The story lines (and there were many) were choppy and unbelievable. It was like reading Instagram posts, disjointed. Unfortunately I'm a true fan so I will more than likely buy what she puts out next. Just hoping she gets back to the way she used to write.

forgot but Im glad I remembered.
The book started off slow and I kinda lost interest. I continued reading and it eventually picked up the pace and my interest. I am also going through a change in my marital status and feel alone and wondering what should I do and how to reinvent myself. This book felt as if she were reading my mind and heard my conversations. It gave me hope and a new motivation to stay on the path I am on and see what lies ahead of me. I almost forgot until I read this book. Great Read!

Slow start, strong finish
From the synopsis of the book, it sounds like the protagonist is going to go on this wild adventure searching for the spark that she lost; unfortunately the interesting journey doesn't occur until the last 20 or so pages in the book. There are too many mudane side stories that are discussed. The main character is very likeable and you take a vested interest in her self explanatory journey. However, the book was a very slow start, meaning, the story did not become interesting until about 3/4 of the way through the book. By the time the story turns its focus back on the main character, the story ends. I'm not sure is McMillian ended the book in that manner in an effort to pique interest in a sequel. If so, if the new book picks up toward the end, I would read a second novel picking up where this story left off. I would not recommend this book if you are looking for a romance novel nor if you are looking for ways to find your lost spark in life. The beginning the book will leave annoyed and hoping that the next chapter will be the chapter that something exciting happens. out of the 352 pages in the book, the last 100 or so pages were the best part of book. To have to spend 2/3 of of the book muddling through boring and seemingly unnecessary side stories about various people in her life, this make the book not worth the investment. I will say again that, once the story picked up, It becane interesting and I would read a sequel. However, if the sequel is organized like this book (2/3 of the book is boring and unnecessary) then I am not looking forward to it.

Aunty G!
This book has been a much needed distraction!! I love Wanda and Aunty G’s relationship! Georgia’s Vivid way of describing everything and everybody kept me on the edge of my seat and randomly laughing out loud with people wondering what wrong with me! I was hopeful with the arrival of each blast from the past that my aunty would get laid! I could taste each meal she prepared and I really wanted her and James to hook up...! Those damn daughters but I’m so glad my aunty allowed her daughters to learn life at a healthy distance while still being completely supportive. As for that damn velvet and violet, they’re a handful that I would have had to disown despite the length of the friendship, yet, aunty showed up for another love and that’s why I love her! Please invite me to the next family shindig or send me a nice piece of your art! LOL... the excessive use of the term “huzzy” kept me chuckling as it’s a term offer used by my own older cousins!!Again, I loved this novel !!

Boring and Predictable.
This must be the worst novel from Terry McMilan that I have read. The story, based around a woman who is bored with her job as an Optemetrist is so far fetched it beggers belief. To re-boot her life she wonders what has become of past flames/husbands and starts to track them down which runs counter to her desire to give up her job and release her creative urges in the form of furniture restoration. Yawn. The most interesting characters are her mother and sister who have more personality than her and the many ex boyfriends and husbands put together. It is a predictable and boring novel and I found myself skipping 10 or so pages at a time and even then I could not finish it!It certainly does not live up to her previous novels, especially a Day Late and a Dollar Short and has probably put me off buying another of her books ever again.

Disappointed
Having read this authors books before I was excited to read another. Perhaps it appeals to others but not to me. Struggled my way through it.

A more calmer Terry
I liked this book but did not love it. Earlier work was compulsive reading. It took me a few days to get through this one. It does tell a story but not enough drama in this book.

Excellent read, got lost in Georgia.
What else can you give. Terry always delivers. Could have done with a chapter on them fitting into each and world, before their fairy tale life began. But loved it anyway.Would recommend it to anyone ready to love again after being broken hearted.😃👍
