In to the chuck body for about 1/2" and the protruding jaws will hold. Where the spindle shaft screws into the chuck it tapers down to about .400"

can the bed be extended

BOTH the Head end (motor and head chuck) and the Tailstock (center holder) can be moved along the bed to INCREASE the work area out to 160mm. Loosen the 4 Philips head screws on the rear of both the head and tailstock slightly and both with slide on the bed to extend the work area.

Can this cut copper for jewelry like rings?

No it's too cheap and small. That's what I bought mine for and even after I modified it to where I thought it would work, it still didn't work. Sorry. Good luck on your search. Best bet most likely is to buy the one from harbor freight honestly. That is what I'm working on doing myself.

absolute garbage

Major waste of money. had to shim the tailstock to TRY and get it in. chuck is out too far to be useful for anything other than a paper weight.
