Here are some situations that I find the remote useful. 1
I did use the GoPro app since it is free and you can preview the footage on the smartphone. However, if you find the app slow/cumbersome to use then a remote might be the choice. Here are some situations that I find the remote useful.1. If your hands are occupied (like riding a bike) or you are wearing gloves, the app is a pain because you have to get your phone out of your pocket, unlock the phone screen, and then a bunch of taps to get it done. With the smart remote you can start/stop recording with a single tap anytime.2. If you are filming in some extreme environments (say someplace wet, dusty or where you might drop your phone, you are swimming or on the beach). Great Alternative to the GoPro remote
Works great with my GoPro and much cheaper. I have had no issues.

Not intuitive enough unless you want to memorize light patterns.
Okay but I wish I would have bought the manufactures model instead. Trying to remember what the light indicators mean to determine what mode your in is more headache than it's worth.
