For Love or Country - The Arturo Sandoval Story [DVD]

As a trained trumpet player who has moved on to other things in life, I have utmost respect for the many fine trumpeters of the world, but Arturo’s story is special among all. Not only is he a great musician, but also a wonderful supporter of music education. Andy Garcia did an incredible job portraying his journey. One of my favorite movies of all time 🎼

Since I have been unable to locate an address in which to write Mr. Garcia to explain how this film touched me, I thought this might be the next best thing. As a "natural born" citizen of the United States, I often feel overwhelming guilt for the suffering of the people who live in countries ruled by dictatorships and tyranny, while I enjoy innumerable freedoms here. Mr. Garcia has brought us a film that inspires hope, courage of conviction, and raises our awareness of the suffering still going on in his birthplace without bringing the stinging guilt that such a movie usually instills in me. I cried, then paced my apartment, then searched the Web for hours trying to find a way to contact Mr. Garcia to tell him that his message is received and appreciated.The story is so amazing, it is almost difficult to believe that Mr. Sandavol not only lived it, but managed to see his whole family emigrate to the U.S. Thank you, HBO and Mr. Garcia, for telling a story that deserved to be told.

It was a wonderful story depicting the struggles of one certain trumpet player who clearly loves music and wants to share it with America. Events in Cuba prevent him from playing American lyrics. The movie depicts his very personal struggle to get past the walls that hold he, his wife, his children and his family. He made several attempts to defect to no avail. There were heartaches and disappointments, but he persevered. There were cultural differences between Cuba and the United States. Arturo continues the struggle to get his family to the United States throughout the movie and the excitement and adventure builds. This movie is based on a True Story and it's wonderful!.The couldn't have chosen a better actor to play Arturo Sandoval. Andy Garcia is riveting in this performance.

Accurate portrayal of Sandoval's life and music.

This reviewer must be one of the luckiest trumpet players alive. I own one of Arturo Sandoval's former personal trumpets. Watch this excellent movie and you will quickly see what an honor it is to own one of Arturo Sandoval's horns. As for the movie, I am a trumpet player so what's not to like about this movie? This movie will give you a true love for Arturo Sandoval and his music, and for the Cuban people who unfortunately still till this day continue to suffer under an antiquated oppressive communistic dictatorship. Also, I don't think that Andy Garcia is actually playing a trumpet, the trumpet playing sounds like it is all dubbed in(Perhaps it is all Arturo?)

This bio-flick traces Arturo Sandoval's career as a talented but frustrated musician in Havana. Under the Castro dictatorship, Sandoval is very limited in expanding his musical potential. On a world tour with Dizzy Gillespie, he seizes an opportunity to escape to the West and be free to explore jazz idioms that are forbidden in Communist Cuba. The story blends great jazz music along with the poignant struggle of a caged artist.The anxiety caused by separation from his family makes Sandoval's story especially compelling. Andy Garcia delivers a marvelous performance as the gifted musician who summons the courage to break free.

Despite the title ‘For Love of Country’ it is really a beautiful love story between a man and a woman.Andy Garcia at his best!

I loved this, because i was working with grp records and got to meet arturo, both talent and the man, i will never forget and the movie was beautiful though Garcia really over did trying to know about the jazz we grew up with.

Great film and terrific trumpet playing. Watched four times already. Delivery was good...

Ich habe diesen Film durch Zufall gesehen;seit dem bin ich auf der Suche danach und überglücklich, dass er jetzt in Deutschland erhältlich ist. Er erzählt sehr eindrucksvoll die Geschichte eines der(wenn nicht sogar des) besten Trompeter unserer Zeit. Andy Garcia spielt seine Rolle ausgezeichnet und die Musik ist natürlich über alle Zweifel erhaben. Bemerkenswert ist auch der Dizzy Gillespie Darsteller.Ein Muss nicht nur für Jazz-FansUneingeschränkt empfehlenswert

Indispensable pour les amateurs de salsa et les "fans" d'Arturo Sandoval ! Les images sont très belles , Andy Garcia très bon , et la bande-son (interprétée par Arturo lui-même) superbe ! Après avoir vu ce film , on a envie d'en savoir plus sur Arturo , de le voir en " Live ", et également d'acheter le CD de la musique du film , qui est très belle , interprétée et composée en partie par Sandoval. Egalement une page d'histoire de Cuba ! Je vous le recommande sans hésitation .
