Island Follies: Romantic Homes of the Bahamas: The Tropical Architecture of Henry Melich

A historic architectural journey through storied homes.
This book is a journey through history from these beautiful and storied homes. An incredible amount of quality and depth of research went into it. Thank you to these authors for preserving and capturing the history and photographs of the fading past and ensuring this style endures. The architecture exemplifies a timeless sensibility that feels curated and historic but still current and accessible with a touch of whimsy. This book masterfully incorporates the juxtaposition of traditional styles of architecture: Greek Revival, Colonial, and Georgian with the relaxed feel and colors of the islands. Much like the eclectic inhabitants of these homes, you will find design inspiration from all over the world. The architectural elements are historically correct with Palladian Windows, Dental Moldings, Columns, and beautifully pitched roofs without feeling too formal or stuffy. The idyllic houses wed historical precedent with the Island lifestyle. The interiors seamlessly blended many styles as well. Formal Zuber wallcoverings, plaster walls, and Chippendale Fretwork assembled with more rustic wood floors and whitewashed pecky cypress accents. Each home photographed in this book transports the reader to not only a different place but, a different time. A time of elegance, intention, and incredible attention to detail. This beautiful book is perfect as a living room conversation piece but also a reference work for avid design professionals, architects, and neo-traditionalists.

Fabulous !!
What a truly beautiful book. Great stories filled with wonderful tropical images of classical architecture. I found the stories particularly interesting around each house and the clients Melich came in contact with.Definitely worth it and my new favourite book for the coffee table.
