Q: Instructions are in Japanese. Anyone have a translation? Specifically, does the donabe need to be seasoned first?

The answer is in the cookbook. It's quite simple. This is how to season it. 1. Fill the donabe about 3/4 full. Add COOKED rice - about 1/5 of the volume of water. (Remember: this is all approximate). Stir thoroughly. 2. Cover and cook over low to medium-low heat. 3. Once it starts to simmer, uncover and cook over low heat until it becomes like paste. Stir occasionally so the bottom does not burn. (The duration depends on the size of the donabe. For example, for medium-sized donable, the cooking time could be about 1 hour.) 4. Turn off the heat. Let everything cool for about 1 hour. 5. Discard everything. Wash the donabe thoroughly with a soft sponge and mild soap. Dry completely before using it. (To prevent cracking, do not set the wet donabe over heat. Place the donabe upside down to dry, preferably overnight. If storing for a while, leave it in a dry location. High humidity can cause mold to grow inside. Last, but not least, the donable is not for storing food as the clay body could absorb the smell if food is left in it for many hours.) CAUTION: This is NOT dishwasher-safe. This is the gist of it. Thank goodness for the cookbook as I don't read Japanese either.

Q: Can this be used on an electric stovetop?

I am not sure of the answer. However, I know that it's required that the outside and bottom of the pot is fully dry before cooking - whether it's gas, electric, etc. Good luck and happy cooking!

Q: What are the measurements without its handles ? Height without the lid ?

Without the handles, O.D is 11", with the handles is 12 1/4", Inside diameter ( I.D ) for lid is 10 1/4", I.D. of the Hot Pot is 9 3/8", Inside height is 3 3/8" Height of the Pot without the lid is 3 7/8" (measured outside)
