Q: I cant get these to work. Not leaking at all, but you turn it over and nothing happens.

You have to swirl the water around before it will create a tornado effect. The unit itself just connects the bottles.

Q: can you use these for cosmetics or other size bottles than water bottles? I want to drain the contents of say a lotion bottle into a new lotion bottle

You would probably loose a lot of your cosmetic product in the prosess. These are meant for kids craft and have a small opening in the center of the item to help produce a tornado effect with water. Cosmetics would likely pool in the center of these items and "gunk" up.
