Broken Horses: A Memoir

Counting on a sequel!
Have you ever read a memoir and hoped the next installment is published immediately? Because I hung on her every word and time flew right by and by the resolution, I had a million more questions.I’m dying to be back with Brandi Carlile and the whole crew because I feel like part of the story.Infinite love. And I’ll admit I’m a more recent fan; I have always loved her voice and the band’s vibe in general; I became a fan during the pandemic and this is when the rest of the world seemed to finally get it too! I think the emphasis on this part of the journey could also set us up nicely for some more chapters. Congratulations BC: You really are a beautiful tender soul. I’m so honored to read your words! Deep gratitude for your vulnerability♾🤟🏽

Thanks for the Book! Amazing
Thanks for the book, it was very professionally packaged & I look forward to reading it.! You said it only had writing in it on the first page with at date. This book is marred. There are 5 places where you have underlined sentences with a black pen.

I hated for this book to end
This woman is so exceptionally special that I am at a loss as to what to say in a review. She seems to love and be loved by everyone and certainly including me.

An emotional ride you won't forget
As a new fan (just 3 month) of Brandi Carlile, I was riveted to the 300-plus pages of this musical memoir that will be an emotional ride you won't forget!Although it's been such a short fandom of her, I've totally fallen for her music and her writing!I bought all of her CD's (though 1 is still to arrive), and love her powerful raw voice that may sound country, but covers a broad spectrum of folk, rock, blues, and country! So I bought her book "Broken Horses" hoping it would match the quality of her music! It did, and by a country mile...so to speak!I was surprised she's a high school dropout, based on how intelligent and mature her prose is.Also thrilled to know we live about 100 miles apart! This memoir provides much more than her career and life history. It gives much insight into a lesbian's thoughts and daily life.I love it when she repeats stereotypes of lesbianism, in a voice that sounds satirical, but loving! And she's very open about her various relationships, including her marriage to a former employee of Paul McCartney! She talks about all her musical and life influences (Barack Obama is on her list of big names she's met!).However, as I'm also a relatively new fan of lesbian twin singers Tegan and Sara (very close in age to Brandi!), I was a bit surprised she doesn't even mention them in the book! She states she's two women--one the singing and performing star, the other the dirty fingernails horse loving, fisherwoman, old dungaree wearing, queer woman--and that her wife Catherine prefers the latter version! What makes this memoir extra special are the many photos throughout the book, and the printed lyrics of many of her fantastic songs (as well as some by Elton John, Dolly Parton, and others!), found at the end of many chapters! She's a really fascinating writer with a completely captivating prose style! She's also a fantastic performer (I've seen several of her concert videos on YouTube!), has great style (Love the hats she wears!!), and such an incredible voice!Buy her music, and buy this book--and if you haven't or can't see her in concert, watch the videos! You won't be disappointed!

Loved the book, disappointed in the photos
Love Brandi and her warm hearted, well written book but was disappointed in the quality of the photos in the paperback. They were very small and dark and captions were hard to read. Would have appreciated less photos per page so they could've been larger. The fact that many of the more recent ones were taken by Pete Souza, Obama's White House photographer, it seems a waste to not present them in a better manner.

Every song tells a story
Upon reading the opening passages of "Broken Horse: A Memoir", fans and readers are in for an intimate journey into the life of prolific singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile. The autobiography is similar to looking at a family photo album and a diary, especially reading the song lyrics of the music that help to influence and shape the musical path that took Carlile from home to the world. The memoir is more than a biography of her life, it is an up close and personal experience of the people that were the most closest, family -- parents, siblings, grandparents, and friends and community. For every memoir or retelling of one's experience, there is a story. There is no denying, Carlile shares with readers the brief story behind the title of the book that relates to a childhood memory of caring for a horse named "Drummer" that was the broken horse; the horse did indeed possess a broken leg and with the story, there were fun times as well as the sad ones too. This is one of many interesting personal tidbits that Carlile retells with much fondness for the horse and stories that showed her humble beginnings and her untiring inspiration to play and write music; at the end of each chapter are lyrics from songs from her favorite singers as well as her own from her catalog of compositions.Overall, the memoir is a delight to read and the most fascinating aspect is that readers get to know Carlile much more about the woman behind the music. After listening to her music throughout the years from her first album and the song and album "The Story" that spotlighted a once up and coming artist, Brandi Carlile is now a seasoned one. There is no doubt, there will be more to stories to share in her musical journey -- there is no stopping her now.

A beautiful and engaging memoir
Brandi Carlile is an extraordinary women and her memoir is nothing short of brilliant. It is so personable and honest, it’s funny and sometimes sad, it’s insightful and thoughtful, and so beautifully written. Her life story is fascinating, so to know how far she has come from her early days to where she is today is quite remarkable. Brandi’s story encompasses all aspects of her life and the amazing things she has achieved thus far. The global recognition and acceptance she is finally receiving is incredibly well deserved. Broken Horses has become one of my favourite books and I will enjoy reading it many times over.I highly recommend the audiobook too as Brandi sings the songs that are printed in the book. Pure bliss. 😌

Sometimes the deepest wounds to be forgiven are by Family.
This my 4th Best Musician's Memoir after Johnny Cash by Robert Hilburn; Rumours of Glory by Bruce Cockburn; and Born to Run by the Bruce Springsteen. Brandi Carlile not only has the voice and musical chops to write and render great music with thought provoking lyrics steeped in the life around her; but has also written a wonderful life-engaging book! Ever so often you pause and consider your own journey and milestones along the way that you've accomplished or carried. A must read and I dare you not to read it a second time over!

Country back in its roots
Cute, fresh and millennial in its approach to transgenerational patterns and positive memories.Liked the reporter-like way of describing events matter-of-factly. Some of them were cut short thou just when they got gripping.
