Jalani and the Lock (African American Quartet) Review: Love this eloquently written and boldly illustrated book! - There are 240 power-packed words in the story of Jalani and the Lock, one of the most eloquently written books of any kind about the tragic history of how African people arrived in America. As a literacy specialist and trainer, I have had the pleasure of reading this book to children and adults of all ages. All are moved by the lean, beautiful language and the gorgeous, colorful, and bold illustrations. I recently shared the book with a 7-year-old child who was just learning to read. Once she mastered the story, she read it to me with insight and enthusiasm, and it is one of the books that has fueled her success as a reader and her desire to excel. Thank you, Dr. Pace, for the gift of Jalani and the Lock. From it we draw strength, courage, and determination to ensure that all people can live forever free. Review: jalani tells a needed story - Dr. lorenzo pace is one of americas's outstnding artists whose work embodies, painting, music and performance. this book has a real basis as the lock that is depicted was given to dr. pace by his father and was the lock that chained his great grandfather during his enslavement in south carolina. pace's images are touching and the dialogue is simple yet stirring. this children's book carries a message for adults as well. ajg

I ordered this book on request for an art class, and the delivery time for it was very good. The book itself was in wonderful conditions.

Best Black History book for preschoolers!
This is a beautifully simple book on slavery. With imaginative art and a single line on each page, it still manages to portray a powerful message that even little ones get. Don't overlook the afterward! It reveals to the reader that the author/illustrator is the great great grandson of the child, Jalani, with a little surprise, to boot!
