Dr. lorenzo pace is one of americas's outstnding artists whose work embodies, painting, music and performance. this book has a real basis as the lock that is depicted was given to dr. pace by his father and was the lock that chained his great grandfather during his enslavement in south carolina. pace's images are touching and the dialogue is simple yet stirring. this children's book carries a message for adults as well. ajg

This is a beautifully simple book on slavery. With imaginative art and a single line on each page, it still manages to portray a powerful message that even little ones get. Don't overlook the afterward! It reveals to the reader that the author/illustrator is the great great grandson of the child, Jalani, with a little surprise, to boot!
