The Prophet Paperback – May 28, 2016

I don't know how I've lived 21 years without this book. It's absurdly beautiful and will move you beyond words. I first borrowed this from my library, but before I even got a page through I knew I'd have to buy a copy of my own to reread and study. It's definitely one of my favorite books. I'm honestly thinking about buying several copies to give to my friends and family so they have no excuse not to read it, it's that good. This should be required reading for everyone on Earth. If you're wondering whether or not to read it, I'll make a decision for you: DO IT. You won't regret it.

Save your eyes and do not purchase this particular copy!! Seriously, the book is only 38 pages.... so let's use the tightest, smallest font possible!? That makes noooo sense.This copy Is more like a 'phamplet' and not so much a bound book. I do not even require reading glasss yet I seriously will never read this copy. Seriously, it's maybe an 8 point font.If you want my copy, let me know. Sooooo frustrating and ridiculous.

A great book of wisdom. Lots of very wise poetry. I was especially heartened by the section on raising children. “Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of to-morrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth. The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far. Let your bending in the Archer’s hand be for gladness; For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is shot". This is so different from the “Punish childish behavior” teaching that I grew up with - though quiet compatible with my desire to launch my children by the time they were 18.This book is not just about child rearing - just about every topic in life is covered. Kahlil beliefs are much the same as mine.

I lost my original copy forty or so years ago. You can read it a thousand times and you'll learn something every time you read it. I plan to be buried with the copy I just bought. There is more wisdom within it's pages and if you live by the lessons taught there you're sure to live a much richer life. Try reading it with your soul mate.

This is the most beloved, and masterfully written poetic essay by Artist, Philosopher, and Writer, Lebanese-American Author Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931), he paints a colorful picture with words describing the Human Condition.This book has 26 prose poetry fables written in English, and published in 1923 by Alfred A. Knopf.Highly in demand it is always being printed, and has been translated into 40 languages.107 Pages long, it takes about 13 hours to read.The Prophet's main character is named Almustafa, the setting is he has been away from home 12 years and he is about to broad a ship to take him home, when he is stopped by a group of people, and he discusses topics that have to do with the human condition.Dealing with the rigors of love, marriage, children, giving, eating, drinking, work, joy, sorrow, houses, clothes, buying, selling, crime, punishment, laws, freedom, reason, passion, pain, friendship, talking, time, good, evil, prayer, self knowledge, pleasure, beauty, religion, and death.I really like this book because reading it has enlightened me, even though it can be difficult to fully comprehend, this book is very thought provoking. I recommend this book to anyone interested in philosophy, poetry and classic literature.

Timeless poetic stories That bring out the best. This was recommended to me by a friendly waitress on evening. Since then we've been recommending books to each other every time I see her. This recommendation was a unexpected treat. Take the time to read and enjoy its warmth! You'll be recommending this to strangers just as she did to me, making friends in the process. I guess that's the kind of magic this book holds. Happy Reading!!!

My lifetime favorite. I was introduced to this book in the '70s and I have never turned it down since then. I've kept on going back again and again to its beautiful and poetic messages. This book is so timeless and so inspiring that I couldn't keep quoting and sharing Kahlil's words with my kids, relatives, coworkers and friends. This is a book that I intend to introduce even to my grandchildren someday.

I purchased this book as a replacement to the one I had given away. This is one of my all-time favorite books and truly a classic. No matter what religion or belief you have, this book will apply and you will relate to it. This is one to read over and over during the course of your lifetime and to share with loved ones, and alsowith people that you just think may need to read it.

Not going to review the content because we already know it's a great classic.With a nice textured finish, the hardcover quality is excellent. It does not have a dust jacket but thats fine as the cover design is great. Well binded and neatly printed, the book does feel nice to see and hold. For size reference, I have placed the book on a 10 inch tablet.

This is my "desert island" book which I refer to over and over again. I must have bought hundreds of copies over the years as I always end up giving mine away when people fall in love with it. I find it a place to find not only deep wisdom but simple guidance on daily life, it restores my spirits and my soul. I have been asked to read"On Marriage" many times at friends weddings, and I refer to "On Work" when I hear folk moaning about jobs and careers. My copy is never far from reach.

This is one of the most magical books that invites the reader to consider spiritual issues without being overtly 'religious' . Some of the writing on 'children', 'marriage' and suffering is very powerful indeed. for example - on marriage:Let there be spaces in your togetherness, And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup. Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf. Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone, Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music. Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping. For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts. And stand together, yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow

Really cheap and nasty copy. Published by Amazon themselves.Spelling mistakes and seems more like photocopied pages stuck together. Wish I’d paid the extra £2 for a tidy copy. Will be returning.

I have bought many copies of this book over the years, always end up giving them to people, it is so beautiful Incites thought, and I hate to not have a copy in the house. But it is not a story book, and can not be treated as one.

Like other people, I've had loads of paperback copies of The Prophet and over the years I've given them all away to people who were intrigued by quotes from it. This is a lovely copy, with beautiful illustrations, and feels more in keeping with the quality of what's written in the book! You can't review a book like The Prophet - its simple, uncompromising lessons for life are either your cup of tea or not, but at least I won't be giving this copy away! Lovely.

I was given a copy of 'The Prophet' twenty-something years ago as a birthday gift from a friend; at that time, I thought it was really 'interesting', had some lovely lines in it, and I admired the pictures. Since then, it's lived quietly on my shelf unopened.....until a few months ago. Having read it again at this age, I've come to realize what a truly beautiful and deeply inspiring book this is. Gibran writes so honestly, soulfully, all with such compassion and poetry that demonstrates his remarkable gift for exploring, understanding and sharing his experience of the human condition. It's this then that prompted me to buy this beautiful copy as a birthday gift for someone close to me now, and I hope that they too will enjoy and appreciate this lovely little book as much as I have. It's a book that can be read cover to cover, but it's real pleasure and strength for me, is that it can also be 'dipped into to' whenever you feel the need for a little inspiration or comfort, as I have found myself often doing in the last couple of months or so! I know that this book will continue to be a source of pleasure and comfort throughout my life, and I'm so very glad that I opened it's pages again. I would highly recommend anyone seeking something similar to buy this wonderful little book for themselves and/or for loved ones.

I was amazed to see Kahlil Gibran's name misspelled on the front cover of the book. I was trying to find a copy of THE PROPHET that includes Gibran's sketches. I was really disappointed in this version of such a wonderful classic.

I must have bought The Prophet for so many people over the years as presents because if offers such good advice, wisdom and help on so many topics ranging from love and marriage, giving and receiving, work etc etc. I think it's a cult classic that will never be out of print.

I was looking for an extra-special version of this favourite text, to give away as a present for a key birthday to someone who has everything..... and it did not disappoint. It is sumptuous in its presentation, with detailed, evocative illustrations and this version, being bigger than most copies, is indeed extra-special. Both giver and receiver were delighted.

I was given a copy of The Prophet as a teenager 35 years ago and although I thought I was "into" philosophy I never managed to engage with it. However, I have never forgotten about it, and over the years have read various extracts and quotations that have been taken from it, although my own copy disappeared in the mists of time. More recently I stumbled across a quote that I had not even realised came from The Prophet, and felt compelled to get myself a copy. When it arrived I glanced through it looking for familiar passages but have found that it "speaks" to me on a different and deeper level. Rather than dipping into it, I have started at the beginning and feel almost overwhelmed by the wisdom of Gibran's words. Without a doubt it will stay by my side this time and, hopefully, become a reference point for me in my search for a deeper and more contented meaning to life .

A quick read if you want to rush through it, The Prophet is really one of those gems to keep on your bedside table and dip into every day as a catalyst for reflection on life beyond the daily grind. Not just food but a veritable banquet for thought, presented in simple yet poetic language. Sometimes a little simplistic and overly mystical, The Prophet is nonetheless a comforting antidote to a variety of poisonous misconceptions about love, work, giving, pleasure etc.

Outdated for me, but a good example of literature and poetry - my father would like love this, I gave it to him - this is his thing.

I bought this for my kindle as I have owned many copies over the years and given them to friends going through troubling times. My brother gave me my first copy and I found the language wove a magical web of comfort and kindness. If you have never read Gibran he is well worth trying and you may find yourself passing the book on to friends in need of comfort.

Beautifully written. This should be in every school's library.
