I have a 40 waist also and the XL fits perfect. If you like them loose, I’d go 2Xl. I washed them already and the XL still fits perfect (not really too snug).

They fit true to size my Husband is a 36 waist.

Q: What is the leg opening diameter for the size medium shorts?

there is no elastic, so I would think they would fit anyone I am 6'3 235 and wear a 2xl but I don't have big thighs anymore
