Great Film

Very important well made well balanced documentary. Hugely recommended.

This film goes to another level, with interviews of various people from crews to civilians involved over this period. It touches on the good, the bad and ugly of the bomber offensive. The flying sequences are terrific and the story is woven together with precision and tact. I will watch again.

Made by the same team that made “Spitfire”. This film has some great footage & crew interviews. Limited by having one flying & priceless example this side of the pond & by a very small group of surviving personnel to call on. Flying sequences are not as dramatic as “Spitfire” but still beautiful. The night shots were the most evocative. A fitting tribute.

Equally as well produced as the Spitfire production. It's fashionable nowadays to criticise the bombing of the German Reich during WW2, but what the critics fail to realise is that Britain was fighting for its very survival. If Hitler had won the Battle of Britain or later, the war, there would have been death camps here too, for the Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, and all the others who dared to stand up to him. People forget that.

I managed to catch one of the limited cinema showings of this the day before I received the DVD, so I have seen it twice so far.If you are after a rivet by rivet account of the titular aircraft than you are in the wrong place- this instead is an incredibly moving and powerful telling of the experience of being on a heavy bomber crew during the Second World War, told by the few who remain. It does not shy away from the controversies that rage until this day, but presents both sides in a very thoughtful manner.The aerial filming of the BBMF Lancaster- much of it filmed during the day but 'treated' to appear as if it was twilight/night time- is stunning. I have followed the aircraft virtually all my life and have a massive archive of documentary footage of it, and I have never seen filming of this quality, from such inventive angles. (The only niggle is that the Lanc is continually seen flying about with modern anti-collision lights blinking away all the time, and with the two top hatches always open, which the BBMF insist on doing these days)The soundtrack is moving and very immersive, which brings me to the bonus features on the disc- there are some extra snippets of material that did not make the final film (Including praise for the ground crew, an unforgiveable omission from the main feature) and a very good feature about the recording of the music.If you want rivets, go somewhere else; if you want heart, soul, meaning and the sheer weight of worth, buy this film.

along the lines of spitfire - which if you haven't seen that please do, cinematography & story telling interviews with the FEW are magnificent in both

My brother is a history buff, especially WWII. He was impressed by this film on the Lancaster and recommends it.

This is a documentary I have been waiting for since I found out it was being made. I loved the Spitfire documentary. I got the Blu-Ray version so that everything is crisp and the sound of those Merlin engines would sound incredible. I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED!! Incredible film and I take my hat off to the makers. If you are someone who is into warbirds this is a film for you!

As soon as I saw this film was by the same people who made the film on the Spitfire I ordered this film on the Lancaster immediately!! What a fantastic tribute to an incredible aircraft and the even more amazing men and women who flew her during WWII.The cinematography and restored film clips are breathtaking, along with interviews with the crews that flew her into battle. A must have for any aviation fan…I absolutely loved this Documentary. If you live in North America you’ll need a Region Free Player.
