Willard Price Leopard Adventure

Hits the brief
I discovered Willard Price more than 40 years ago, when I was 7. Was completely obsessed and read little else for years, and still enjoy a re-read. They could be my Mastermind subject. So I was really dubious about a revival with a different writer, and was kind of expecting to hate the new series. But I don't. Same rip-roaring fast-moving stories as in the originals, I've been glued to them and reading each book in a sitting, but with some updates and improvements. Love seeing a girl as a central character, and some female characters. As a 7-year-old girl I was always disappointed that there weren't any girls, so it's nice that that's been fixed.

The return of Willard Price!
I knew when I purchased this book I was going to be very hard to win over, having devoured the superb Willard Price books as a child, loving Hal and Roger Hunt's perilous adventures between 1949 ansd 1980! I have since read and re-read them with much pleasure over the years! Still, how can one resist a 'new' Willard Price book!!I would have to admit that I did not immediately like the modern re-write, finding words like 'puke' in the early pages seemed a little un-Price like! Also, I struggled to believe that Hal and Roger would have such a long term feud, even as adults, especially after all they had been through as young brothers. In addition, the modern picture of the 'adult Hal' emerging from the chopper near the end of the book, well he did look like a retro eagle-eyed action man, which did not perhaps ring quite true! Having said this, I thought the book was very well and attractively illustrated throughout.Does Anthony McGowan hit the spot with this book? Well, it is certainly a book that grows on you as you read it and the plot has many a twist and turn, and on the whole I would have to say (surprisingly) that I ended up really enjoying it! I would like to feel we will see a reconciliation for the brothers and a much more 'stable' Roger and Hal as the other books hopefully emerge. Also, it would be very nice to see Hal and Roger taking a more starring role in later adventures.I did like Amazon and Frazer, and they certainly grow on you, whilst not yet achieving the magic of Hal and Roger's relationship. McGowan also manages to get some great wildlife facts about the Amur Leopard into the book without lecturing too much, which was a real gift of Willard Price. (Although you did feel occasionally that a fact had been 'chiselled-in'). I also did really like the fact sheet at the end of the book and the taster for the next 'Adventure'!So would I buy the next edition? Definately! Although I would really like to see Hal and Roger treated with slightly more realism and sensitivity, as these characters were very finely crafted by Willard Price, and I am not sure they should have been 'wedged out' in this way. I would of course have far more preferred to see an new Adventure book, e.g. Congo Adventure, Indian Adventure or Sahara Adventure, just carrying in the vain of the superb 1-12 books. (I'm sure most fans would agree that Arctic Adveture was not really as good as those 12!) However, the new characters are good and the relationship with Amazon and Frazer is not totally unlike Hal and Roger! It was also interesting to hear that an old villian was re-surfacing near the end of the book!So all in all, a very fair first offering - and more please! A good first effort by Anthony Magowan in an attempt to modernise this much-loved series.
