I was perplexed, as well, and didn't want to damage them by forcing. However, I successfully used a paper clip up by the hole for the key ring. There are indentations across from each other. CAREFULLY inset a heavy paper clip or similar into the indentations and and pry the case open. It doesn't "twist", just snaps open. Inset the AirTag, and snap it shut. I tested them and all seemed pretty secure after snapping shut.

Make sure the air tag is sitting flat. If I remember rightly I had to work it around to snap it closed. It does seal tightly. I had to put it on the counter on a dish towel to carefully push down and close it.

Well, my dog doesn’t chew his tags, so I can’t address that. But otherwise it seems quite sturdy - it’s not hard plastic, looks and feels like leather or a soft plastic look alike. I also have one attached to my car keys, and it’s held up well.
