The ultimate upgrade for old AM4 boards—crazy fast, huge improvement
I used my tax refund to upgrade my old PC with this Ryzen 7 5800X3D. If you’re still on AM4, this is the best processor you can get, period. I bought it for gaming, video editing, and some light AI work because of the big V-cache. For an older platform, it’s honestly lightning fast. Compared to my old 1700X, this thing is night and day. Windows 11 feels super snappy, and if you use a lightweight OS like Windows LTSC or Linux, it’s even faster. My video render times dropped from about an hour and a half to 30–40 minutes for big files, and sometimes just 10–15 minutes for smaller projects. That’s a huge time saver. Gaming performance is fantastic, and I noticed my Stable Diffusion AI renders hit 1080p images in just 10 seconds, which blew me away for a non-top-tier setup. Everything is just smoother and more responsive. The processor is stable. I haven't had any issues with crashes. I believe this processor is locked and can't be overclocked, so you're kind of stuck with the boost speed. However, it does run hot, so I down volt my 5800X3D. I do use it with a liquid cooler, and that keeps my temps around 37C. It isn't super power hungry but make sure you have a higher wattage PSU. If you’ve got an AM4 board and want the best single upgrade without swapping your whole system, this is absolutely the way to go. If you’re building new, there are faster CPUs now, but for an AM4 build, nothing beats the 5800X3D.

Holy Moly!! 5800x3d!
After watching multiple benchmark videos for months, I've finally bought the 5800x3d as I did not want to spend more money to upgrade to am5 for a little bit more performance. Figured why not get the fastest gaming chip for the Am4 platform and boy it is a treat! Upgrading from a R5 3600, and maaan this thing blows it out of the water, even on stock settings! Once I've undervolted and tweaked the curve optimizer for the 5800x3d, the 3600 was done for!! It can't compete when it doesn't even compare! Got on COD WZ 3 just to test as it was the only other game I rarely play, the 3600 only managed to top out the 1660ti (couldn't get past 75% usage) at 107fps at its best (70-90 avg) on ALL LOW graphics settings on 1080p, windows 11/registry/bios tweaks and overclocked gfx card. Playable but the 1% lows (15fps. ugh) were killing me like the 9 year old outgunning me when the fps drops sooooo low in fights, I. LOSE. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. (these young players is something else tho, maybe something in the water they're drinking). I can't even talk smack back because I get my cheeks clapped. To top it off, it sssssstutter. Yeah. Nah. Haven't played since then till after I upgraded to the 5800x3d. The 5800x3d with all the tweaks and over/underclocks, averaging 110-140 fps with 50-65 1% lows. Of course in battle royal. I didn't even care for any of those numbers, the game felt smooth with no sssstutter, NOW I win my fights, hits register, IM CLAPPING back. THIS is what the 1660ti capable of when the usage is 95+%. Thanks to the 5800x3d. If you're on the fence, just get it. Best AM4 socket gaming cpu. Period
I bought a 3950x in Jan 2020. It was a great upgrade over my 2700x. 2700x was the top 2000 series chip. 3950x was the top 3000 series chip. I upgraded to a 7800xt gpu from a 5700xt and decided that the 3950x, while it possessed a monstrous 16 cores and 32 threads, was holding me back in gaming. So I bought this cheaper 5800x3d to replace it. The 5800x3d (only) has 8 cores and 16 threads. This may seem light compared to the 3950x, but remember, the 3950x was a $800 halo cpu on its release date and a production monster. I already had a 240mm AIO liquid cooler. The newer Zen 3 architecture (over the 3000 series Zen 2 and 2000 series Zen+ architecture) and 3d cache is a great upgrade over the 16 core behemoth. The programs that I use cannot utilize all of the threads of the 3950x anyway. In video rendering, I'd never seen over 40% cpu usage with the 3950x. I have not done any video rendering with the 5800x3d, but I believe it will be comparable to the 3950x in my programs. I do know that my fps have increased. This chip cannot be overclocked. That may be a turn-off for some; but this chip is the fastest am4 socket cpu without needing to overclock. The am4 socket is dead. Am5 is the current gen socket. If you want to breathe a little more life into your older ddr4 system, this is a great upgrade. About the only other option that I'd consider is a 5950x.. but that chip does not feature the 3d cache. The physical parts swapping procedure is simple. My 4 year old assisted me in the process. I used Thermal Grizzly Hydronaut thermal paste. It has performed well for me in the past and this is no exception. I bought the 5800x3d cpu approximately a month ago and have zero regrets. With all of the graphics settings maxxed on Minecraft at 1080p resolution, I was pumping out approx. 770fps while looking at the sky. I know that minecraft is a very easy game to run, but I've seen very good framerates in every game I've played. With this cpu, I know that cpu bottlenecking is minimized regardless of what gpu I choose to run in the future. After I deem this cpu to be insufficient, it will be time for a whole new mobo and ram kit and cpu for my next build. But for now, this is a great way to add a few years of life to the computer that I originally built in 2017 with crossfire RX580 gpus.

Holds up even in 2025!
I actually bought this card a few years ago, and it has functioned really well for me! CPU’s are relatively easy to install (especially with a YouTube video) and this one was no different. I was told these run on the hotter side, but I’ve been using a 240mm AIO and never had any issues with it getting too hot. Still rocking it with a 3070 and I’m able to run most new games with high graphics. Worth every penny! Just bear in mind that it won’t work with the newer generation of motherboards to my knowledge. Always check online to make sure it fits first!!

The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D is hands down one of the best CPUs for gamers still on the AM4 platform. I recently upgraded from a Ryzen 5 3600, and the difference in performance is night and day. **Gaming Performance:** The standout feature of the 5800X3D is AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology, which adds 96MB of L3 cache. This translates into a significant boost in gaming performance. Frame rates are noticeably higher in most of the games I play, and there’s a marked improvement in responsiveness, particularly in CPU-intensive titles like strategy games and open-world RPGs. It easily holds its own against many of the newer, more expensive CPUs on the market. **Productivity:** While this CPU is gaming-focused, it still handles productivity tasks like video editing and rendering with ease. It has 8 cores and 16 threads, which makes multitasking a breeze. It might not match the Ryzen 9 series for heavy workloads, but it’s more than sufficient for most users. **Ease of Upgrade:** One of the best aspects of the 5800X3D is its compatibility with existing AM4 motherboards. If you have a B450 or newer board, you can drop this CPU in with a BIOS update, making it a cost-effective upgrade. I was able to keep my existing system intact, including my DDR4 RAM, which saved me a lot of money compared to switching platforms. **Thermals and Power Efficiency:** Thermals are well-managed for a high-performance CPU, though it does run a bit hotter than my previous chip. Pairing it with a quality cooler like the Noctua NH-D15 kept temperatures in check even during long gaming sessions. Power efficiency is excellent, and I didn’t notice any major spikes in electricity use. **Value for Money:** For gamers who want top-tier performance without the expense of upgrading to AM5 or Intel’s latest platform, this CPU is a no-brainer. At its price point, it offers incredible value, extending the life of your AM4 system while delivering performance that rivals much more expensive options. **Conclusion:** The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D is a fantastic CPU for gamers and power users looking to maximize the potential of their AM4 systems. Its combination of gaming performance, compatibility, and value makes it one of the best upgrades you can make without moving to a new platform. If you’re a gamer or someone who enjoys squeezing every ounce of performance from their PC, this CPU is a worthy investment. Highly recommended!
