Q: Does this expansion set work with Thomas take n play tracks?

No the take n play tracks and train cars are smaller.

Q: Since this is an expansion track, what did you start out with originally?

Our tracks were given to us- we had many pieces similar to what is in here. it says it is an expansion pack, but it really is a great starter set as well!

Q: Are these pieces really so small that a child under 3yr shouldn't use it? I have a 15m old and think she would love having a set like this.

I bought a set like this (not this exact one, to be clear) of Thomas trains and tracks for my son when he was 18 months old and he LOVED it. And it was the single best gift we ever gave anyone - he and then his sister played with it for over 10 years, until we finally bequeathed it to younger cousins so that at least we can still play with it at their house. The trains have small pieces that you need to watch out for when they are little, but I personally found it not to be a particular choking hazard because they only wanted to drive the trains around the track anyway. When they get older then they get creative designing the tracks and collecting their favorite characters.
