New plans series off to a good start
MMP Books has a new series of books devoted to conventional ship line drawings of which this is the first. It's a rather late entry in this field as two other Polish publishers have been at it for awhile now - BS with their Profile Morskie series and Kagero with some of the books in their Top Drawings series. The book is a square bound card cover of European A4 (8-1/4" x 11-3/4") dimensions but the 12 pages are A3 sized (11-3/4" x 15-3/4"), each page folded to fit in the card covers. The ship is depicted at three different times - 1920 (as built), 1939, and 1944 (when lost). The drawings are in three scales. Two pages are devoted to 1:350 scale, a plan and profile at each time period above plus body plans and an inboard profile. These views are duplicated in 1:200 scale over 8 pages and in 1:700 scale over a mere one half of one page. The remaining 1 1/2 pages are devoted to fittings in various scales, an unscaled perspective of the bridge structure, and tables of specifications and class list. There are no photos or separate text and no color of any sort. The drawings are well done but I can't really comment on accuracy. The one criticism I have is that the drawings are bound in and can't be removed and laid flat. Other series have unbound drawings or stapled in drawings that can be removed by removing the staples.Still the book is recommended. It seems to offer enough value for the asking price. But it is not a ship monograph of any sort.
