Folks, pay no attention to the only other rating at my time of posting - 2 stars is simply unjustified based on the reviewer thinking this was a dessert cookbook. This is a great collection of the recipes you expect from Gooseberry Patch. Yes it includes sweets, but the definition of baking is not solely limited to cakes, pies and cookies! To bake is to cook using dry heat in an oven. It was 42 pages gone, disappeared etc. That comes to 84 recipe pages and pictures that are not in this book and should be. Who ever did this damage was quite skillful at it but it would not work for anyone as it is. It is ready to go out tomorrow.

I have probably collected at least 200 cookbooks over the past 35+ years, and this book ranks #1 in my collection along with the original Pioneer Woman Cooks, and a book I bought from a church fund raiser, many years ago. This book combines a wonderful blend of sweet and savory recipes. I am always happy when I get a new cookbook if I like 50 percent of the recipes, or find two or three new recipes I have not seen before, and that is hard to do when I have so many cookbooks. However, I found that I liked probably 95 percent of the recipes in this book. I also discovered that there were many recipes I had not seen before, or that some of the old standards had something different added to the recipe, giving it a possible new twist. The book is well laid out, and is visually appealing to the eye. The book is filled with colored photos. I spent over an hour thumbing thought this book when I received it. To me, it has a great balance between the number of sweet recipes and the number of savory recipes. I rarely write reviews, but felt this wonderful book rated my putting forth the effort to do so. I can hardly wait to start trying some of the recipes.

This book is one of a Gooseberry Patch series of cookbooks. It is perfect as an old favorite of country recipes in categories of baking---everything from cakes, pies, and cookies to side dishes, casseroles, and entrees. It would be great as a secondary cookbook for beginners who know the basics, too. It would appeal to anyone who enjoys baked meals. I think we all have our favorite caserole we cook on a wintery night. The varierty is worth the purchase to have enough super recipes to put the entire meal in the oven!!!

I chose this rating because I did like it, but there were some things that could have been better about the cookbook. I liked the creativity of the recipes in the cookbook. However, I wish the strawberry cake recipe in the cookbook was completely from scratch instead of the cake mix shortcut it has. I would recommend this cookbook to anyone who enjoys baking.

I really enjoy a lot of these recipes and so has my family. I will be cooking from this book often.
