No sugar - but very, very sweet...
Organic, raw and vegan, Portuguese made Gutsy Captain Zero Kombucha Tea is good for gut health. I've taken a wide range of vitamins and supplements for many years but this year I've been looking to focus more on an area I feel I've neglected - gut health. In this pack of 8 screw topped amber plastic part-recycled bottles - each 400ml - you're getting a mixed box of flavours. I was keen to try Zero as it's a little different from the Captain's regular Kombucha drinks in that it contains no sugar, hence the name. There's sero sugar and zero calories.Unpasteurised, this drink is packed with live cultures - as well as being vegan, free from colourings and preservatives. I'd been keen to give this a try as for me the Gutsy Captain's regular Kombucha is a bit too sweet. But does Zero taste any good? Well, if you enjoy sweetness you may like this - and it could be a healhier choice if you like the taste of sweet carbonated drinks. Zero isn't carbonated. It's naturally bubbly as it's fermented. However, if you're not so keen on sweet drinks, strangely if anything I found the Captain's Zero even more sweet than his regular formulation. Drunk cool from the fridge, it was hard to identify the flavours as the sweetness very much took centre stage. So this is not for me. But it's reasonably priced, evidently a quality product - and it may be for you.

I Make and Buy Kombucha Quite Regularly - This is My Honest Opinion:
As a drinker kombucha, often making it at home using a Lakeland jar built entirely for that purpose which I bought from Amazon a few years ago, I can wholeheartedly say, I really didn't like the flavours of this brand at all. They overwhelmingly taste of stevia which is a sugar substitute that is 100 to 300 times sweeter than sugar, it has no carbs, calories but it hasn't been studied yet enough to recognise the impact on your kidneys and cardiovascular system - so its not a cure all alternative. There is one downside: it does leave an unwelcome, unpleasant and bitter aftertaste, which personally I detest.I hate that something so raw, natural and full of goodness has to be adulterated with alternative sweeteners. I use unrefined brown sugar to make our home brew, the ones I purchase and love use the same. The sugar is metabolised by the scoby in any case, so why change to an alternative sugar sub which processes the sweetness only to then alter the flavour with the addition of the bitterness?I would consider myself pretty fit and active. Drinking the standard recipe has not made me question my diet so far.I do however see the draw for someone who needs to reduce their intake of natural sugars and move over to other forms, to them I can only say, honestly, this is not that pleasant.2 stars

Interesting alternative to ice tea or fizzy pop
I've had Kombucha once before, a different brand from Gutsy Captain, and I wasn't that keen. However, I was wanting to try a different brand and flavour to see if I could be persuaded, so when this 8 pack from Gutsy Captain came up for review, I jumped at the chance.First off I was please that the 8 pack came in relatively minimal packaging, and that the bottles have some recycled plastic content. Also, the ingredients have been certified organic, (but not by the Soil Association, but by another organisation that I hadn't come across before). Vegan-friendly too (not sure what animal products you would expect in this sort of drink to be fair). Therefore the brand and these drinks do appear to be very environmentally conscious which is good. With regards to taste, I have tried the Ginger and Lemon, Raspberry, and Original to date. I particularly liked the ginger and lemon when served chilled it makes a great BBQ type drink for a warm summer's day. The ginger isn't firey hot (which is a shame in my opinion) but you definitely taste it along with the lemon. You also get an iced tea aftertaste with all the flavours, but I found it more pronounced in with the ginger and lemon than the raspberry. The raspberry was also good, with a fine balance of the tea flavour and the fruit. As for the original, I found it too astringent without other flavours to balance it. There is just enough artificial sweetener in the drinks, to try and balance the bitterness of the tea, and it didn't taste too artificial.Beyond the minor gripes about the flavours being a bit too astringent, the only other negative issue is the labels on the bottles. Whoever thought that font style and size were a good idea, really should have considered those with dyslexia or with a visual impairment. I have neither, but even I struggled to read the labels for the ingredients and nutritional content etc. If the label was clearer, this would have been a 4-star review based on flavour alone, however, due to the poor labelling, 3-stars is all I can honestly give. Price-wise (at the time of review in May 2022, each bottle equates to just under £2.50), not a bad value for the size of bottles, flavour and organic ingredients.

Tasty as always
Always like the taste, just wish they’d use cans rather than plastic bottles!
