Very dissapointing "instruction" on converting to circular knitting; Nice flat knitting patterns though
I own and love the (first) Treasury of Knitting Patterns by Barbara Walker. The patterns are well written, easy to understand, and the photographs add greatly to the usefulness of the book. In all honesty I will not live long enough to be able to use even a fraction of the patterns in the book so didn’t really need another Treasury. I do a lot of circular knitting – knitting in the round. A few comments on the internet noted that A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns included instruction on how to convert flat knitting patterns to patterns for use in circular knitting. I didn’t need any more flat knitting patterns, but looking forward to the ability to convert flat knitting patterns to circular knitting made me put A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns on my wish list. I received it from a family member for Christmas. Imagine my disappointment when I found only three and a half pages of commentary about converting to circular knitting out of a 388 page book! There were no specific examples; there were no instructions given for even a few patterns showing how they had been converted; there were no patterns designed for circular knitting. There were no step by step instructions on how to convert even one example pattern. There was little discussion about converting the more difficult lace type patterns with yarn overs etc. The brief and not very helpful directions given are already available on the internet, and I wanted more in depth instruction. I am still giving this book a good rating because if what you are looking for is another great group of patterns from Barbara Walker, I would expect this book to fill your needs. If, however, you wanted to learn how to convert patterns from flat to circular knitting this book gets one star. I am returning the book.

professional reference manual
I was influenced to buy Barbara Walker's first and second "Treasury of Knitting Patterns" by the high praise they received in the customer reviews. I am not sorry I bought the books, but I am moved to make these remarks for other potential buyers. These books, while containing a truly astounding number of knitting patterns, should be considered as professional references, and are best be borrowed from the libray if you are a beginner. While it is true that some of the patterns could be worked by a determined beginner, the sheer number of patterns and the complexity of many patterns, in my opinion would overwhelm a beginner. I agree that many beginner knitting patterns are dull, all in stockinette stitch and could be improved with a more interesting textured pattern, but there is no need to own these books unless you are truly a professional. Borrow them from the library for inspiration; ask a more advanced knitter to help you choose some of the simpler patterns and copy those pages only. I gave the books four stars because they are very scholarly encyclopedias of knitting patterns that should not be lost and no professional knitter's library would be complete without them. However, the books ARE dated; the photographs of the swatches are in black and white only and are very small. The black and white photographs do not show the two- or three-color patterns well at all. (See "Knitting with Novelty Yarns" for examples of how modern photographic technique can display knitted swatches.)

Second in a series of stitch references
Having used the first book in the series again recently, I decided another would be a good addition to my knitting library. I was not disappointed. This book continues the collection of stitch patterns started in the first. If you design, or if you just want to make a whole bunch of different washcloths or blanket squares, you need this book. It's fun just to look through the book at all the different things you can do. I'm going to have the whole set eventually, they're that good.

Sends your imagination soaring ...
I bought this second treasury before buying any of Barbara Walker's other collections, because of the reviews it received. I am awed by all the knowledge contained in this book! In addition to the hundreds of stitch patterns (and Ms. Walker knitted all the swatches herself!), Ms. Walker offer ideas for how to incorporate these designs into a pattern and how to adapt them for knitting in the round; and she shares a little history or advice for every stitch pattern. There are a whopping fifteen chapters of stitch patterns in this book! Stitch categories include:* Knit/purl (texture) combinations -- solid, colorwork, and fancy* Slip-stitch patterns, both solid and colorwork* Mosaic patterns* Fancy color patterns* Twist-stitch patterns* Cables and cable-stitch patterns* Yarn-over and eyelet patterns* Lace* Lace panels and insertions* Borders and edgingsI know some reviewers have complained about the black-and-white photos. I don't mind them a bit, as they are very crisp and clear. I also like how Ms. Walker combined multiple motifs in some swatches, so you get an idea of how they could be combined. This book really sparked my imagination, and I'm looking forward to purchasing other Treasuries.

Real treasure.. wonderful book.. see my video.. for all images of contents etc.
I was lucky enough that I found a first edition copy of this book in our local library sale, for 1.00... yes.. this book is chocked full of anything and everything you would want for patterns, I did a video review of each section contents just a glimpse so you would know how big it is and what it covers.. love this book I recently found out that the author lives in venice.. where we live. pretty cool, I actually saw her in the library where they sell books, I think she volunteers their.. not sure.. just guessing. I have done a lot of research on knitting books..and know which ones I want before my purchase so no surprisesi have tried multiple times to load the video i did of this book.. it won't load for some reason.. soi will redo another video i guess and try it again.. it is probably the best of the 3 books i reviewed by her..also see my review of her lace book..
