Worked Great - is it FTDI?
Worked great right out of the box. They do not appear to actually have the FTDI chipset as their product description shows. I have other FTDI cables and such and the hardware ID includes "FTDI" with those, not with this adapter. Windows 7 had no trouble getting the driver automagically. Used it to communicate to a Digi radio via RS232 null modem cable.

Used for Megasquirt
Kind of a cheap connector, but it is cheap to start with so its expected. Used to connect megasquirt 2 to a laptop. Much better than the other serial converter we used. Superior chipset

Works well with Windows 8.1 to run legacy serial DB9 cables.
My review is aimed at Amateur Radio operators who want a USB to serial DB-9 adapter to allow their old CI-V and programming cables to work on their radios. This USB to Serial adapter works flawlessly for me. Here's the scenario: I have an older programming cable with DB-9 to 3.5mm 3-conductor plug. I've used it on many PCs with various Windows operating systems to program Icom, Yaesu, and Kenwood radios (with proper 3.5mm to various adapters) with legacy serial connectors, or more recently, a Lenovo T400 with a 2504 docking station with DB-9 serial connector.I could not get any Prolific chipset USB to serial adapter to work with my cable on a Lenovo T410 running Windows 8.1. This adapter is recognized by both the T400 and T410 by Windows 7 and Windows 8, respectively (no need to use the driver CD). My old DB-9 cable now works perfectly plugged into the adapter's DB-9 socket. These programming cables can be a tricky business, so I'm confident most other DB-9 based devices would be happy with this USB serial port.Given the low price of this adapter, I'm very happy.

Wrong item - Total waste of my time
First, I have no idea if the item pictured would work or not. I didn't receive this item.I don't know who messed up my order, but I assume it was Cables4Computer. They get the lion's-share of blame. But Amazon's handling of returns is silly and cumbersome. If Amazon had any control on this matter, the would have sent the right item out quickly. Instead, I have to send it back for a refund and reorder the correct item (will NOT be from Amazon this time). What was sent to me was a 120-volt standard power cable for a desktop PC or a monitor in a bag that was sticker-labeled as the $12 FTDI chipset adapter that I ordered. I am returning this, obviously, but Amazon's silly practices will not ship out the correct item, I have to I suppose reorder it from elsewhere because I have lost confidence that I will get what I need this time around. Either this was just a cruel joke or someone who doesn't know what they are looking at in a shipping warehouse. I find it odd that someone calling themselves "Cables4Computer" doesn't know the difference between the item pictured and a power cable. This the 2nd time I have tried to order a USB-Serial converter. The first one (different model and different vendor) didn't work with Win7. The 3rd one of these I buy will not be from Amazon. Lesson learned. Their sub-contractors cannot be trusted. This is the bad side of Amazon, who I'm normally very happy with. I'm just frustrated that I've been trying to buy a USB to serial adapter for about 2 months now and have been unable to get one that will work. I'm willing to pay a fair price to get one, but Amazon just doesn't have interest in getting one out to me.

It actually works!
Serial to USB products are always pretty much a shot in the dark. Maybe it works. Maybe it doesn't. Maybe it kinda works sometimes. You'd think it wouldn't be that complicated ... what do I know?I purchased this to interface my vehicle laptop with an Innovate MTS chain. So, automotive hardware devices. A couple reviews mentioned this working for serial console access on computer servers which I took as a good sign. I'm very familiar with that so I took that as a good sign that this product wouldn't have any issues with the Innovate hardware. Not so much as a hic-cup installing it on an XP SP-3 laptop and no issues at all with the Innovate devices. The only downside to this product is the thumb screws. My cable has the thumb screws on it so I can't screw the cable and adapter together. Thankfully, serial ports are usually snug enough that once plugged together they don't fall apart unless you pull on them.Edward

Great serial adapter
I tried this product after being disappointed with Prolific adapters. I'm using two serial ports attached to a netbook for monitoring debug ports during development of an embedded product. The netbook's dual core Atom processor was at near 100% trying to receive two 110K baud serial streams. Two of these adapters barely register a CPU load receiving two streams. The drivers also don't hang as I've seen with other products.I've run these using Windows 7 and not had any problems. The drivers installed automatically and worked without trouble. Haven't tried any other operating systems so can't give an opinion there. From what I've seen any FTDI based USB serial adapter should give similar results. I chose this one due to the low price and Prime shipping.

USB Malfuntion
malfunctioned right out of the gate, would not operate the device without constantly having to unplug and plug in the usb half the time it wouldn't recognize on the boot which upset me a lot. No thanks talk to your manufacturer before going and getting an alternative the original company might have better idea.

Just what we needed
My wife's new PC has no serial port, but she needs one to communicate with her Bernina embroidery machine. After reviewing a number of the options, I went with this adapter because it seems the FTDI chipset is a must. Item appeared on time, and installed automagically on Windows 7; didn't even see the little driver disc included in the packaging until after it was up and running. The package also comes with a short USB extension cable, but it wasn't needed, plenty of room around the USB port to accommodate this item and other USB cables. A patch for Bernina's Artista software and everything is working great.

Have tried other USB to serial adapters but this FTDI ...
Have tried other USB to serial adapters but this FTDI unit is the only one that works on all of our equipment. Have purchased a few for other co-workers.

Five Stars
Works well with Megasquirt 2 and Tunerstudio when several other adapters would not.
