Lamy Safari | Red | Fine Nib | 5 Black Ink Cartridges, Z28 Converter and Wipe

I like this Lamy Safari pen. For the cost, it's a great pen. The writing or marks are consistent and rarely does the pen ever clog even with permanent ink. It's a class above the very cheap pens including dip pens in my opinion. I also like that I can purchase nibs if I want to experiment with them.

I bought this Lamy Safari | Red | Fine Nib to fill the need for a more rugged, light weight, easy to carry fountain pen to accompany my daily carry note pad. The Safari fits this need perfectly. The fine nib writes smoothly with J. Herbin ( Perle Noire "black") ink and is a great paring. The Safari is well balanced, posting of the cap is solid and it writes great unposted as well. This is a everyday carry, beat it to death with use fountain pen, not a closet queen you pamper and are terrified to hand to someone for a quick signature in mortal fear it will be dropped or nib splayed out by gorilla hands. I've used this little work horse of pens for several days now and grown fonder of it each time it bounces across a counter or suffers at the hands of others use. If you need a work horse instead of a show horse, you may find the Safari fits that bill nicely. Buy this thing.

Overall, this pen has good weight and is easy to write out of the box. I had no problem filling the converter with ink and inserting it into the pen. Though it is plastic, it has a pretty sturdy feel and does not feel cheap. My only con is that the ink flow is heavy out of the nib, even though it is a fine point nib. You have to be careful on some paper. Even trying to adjust the nib to reduce the ink flow did not resolve this issue. To me, this is not a reason to deduct a star - it is more of a good-to-know so you can be mindful when writing with this instrument.

Comfortable and easy to use. Works great for inking over watercolor - just get the right waterproof ink.

After reading all the hype I decided to give a Lamy Safari a go. Was surprised to discover the fine tip isn't very fine at all. And, with modest use, it has definitely become less so. Disappointed. There are lots of competitors so I don't believe I'll purchase another Lamy Safari.
