Inspiring movie
Such an inspiring movie finds me rooting for the girl in her struggles. The movie was respectful to the culture and the struggles that lie in that region, but mostly focuses on the potential that humans have when given the encouragement, opportunity and faith.

Best movie I've seen in a long time
If you like chess and cheering for underdogs, this is an entertaining movie. Clean, informative, and interesting.

Great family movie! maybe for are 10 or 12+
This was a great find, it may be best for most kids age 10+ (perhaps others who are 12+). Very moving and touching true story. Wonderful introduction to what life is like for some people there. The father is deceased, single mom raising the children and going through such hard things (selling food at the market, being evicted and sleeping on the street, trying to keep her children safe, etc.) One of the sisters goes off with a guy and the mother asks, "Why are you dressed like a woman who sells herself?" (tight sequin dress & skinny pants) or something like that. That daughter becomes pregnant and comes back home. Main character is then concerned of when the boys/men will start coming for her, "Where is my safe square, coach?" There is a flood scene where the little brother is in danger, but he is rescued. A child is hit by a boda boda (motorcycle) and goes to the hospital, needs surgery, family can't pay the hospital fee, so they sneak out. Very realistic to the region and life style. The only romantic scene is of the coach and his wife exchanging a few kisses during a conversation (playfully landing on their bed, fully clothed), I appreciate this positive marriage example and mutual respect between the husband (coach) and wife. We have a few teens who were born in a Western African country and they really love this movie - the market, sights, music, soccer on the street, and behavior of the characters reminds them so much of their home country. Wonderful movie based on a true story. Watch the movie trailers and previews!

A Definite Sleeper
This is definitely a movie to watch more than once. Dialect is hard to understand. The movie is very good. I have a bluray copy and it stored on Vudu. I will watch it again…and again!

Awesome, Inspiring Film
The story is good as well as true. The acting is excellent. Watching, you really get to know how the people live and the difficulties they face every day. This being the case, you can see how really awesome the achievement was, not only by the kids, but the coach as well. The mother was a strong woman living in very difficult circumstances trying to keep her children safe from the hazards of their daily life. The story is uplifting and inspiring.

I won't give up and I won't give in!!! Feel Good Story
True feel good story. Genius can come from the most unlikely places. Katwe is a incredible young lady with an ability to think a chess master. Her life is not one that would normally give such a person the opportunity to reach her potential. In spite of her family initially she is coached and uses her ability to quickly become the best of the best. The acting in this Disney movie is superior, you are drawn into the feelings of Katwe, her mother, played by academy award winning actress Lupita Nyong'o and seeing that this is not smooth sailing story. Is lives in the ghetto of the ghetto in Kampala, Uganda and attempting to make it out is a fight. The acting, music and the hope of something better makes the story move you emotionally and in the end you know that the human spirit is unquenchable.

One of those movies in which you become engulfed in rooting for a person
It is so nice to see a movie that the whole family can watch. The film explores the cultural aspects of a family living in Africa and the path of a young girl with the gift of being a world class chess player. Apparently chess is the intellectual equivelent of what soccer is in sports around the world. This is an excellent film and I highly recommend it.

How come everybody knew about this great movie but me?
All I can say is this is one of the best African movies I have ever watched. Very well made and very entertaining. Want your children to believe they can accomplish anything they put their mind and hard work to? Watch Queen Of Katwe with them and give them some added encouragement. EXCELLENT MOVIE!

Magnifique

Queen all the way
Love true life stories specially about people down and out who make something of themselves in spite of the odds. They are an inspiration to me to not let myself be limited by my limits or society. I also totally enjoy when they show us the real people the movie is portraying, it makes it so much more real to see what they have become.I thought it was nice of them to show what happens when you take somebody out of his comfort zone too fast. Like the young artists of today. They want celebrity, they beg for it, they live for it to find out that it is not all it is cracked up to be. Lot of work, lot of people recognizing you, no more private life. They don't think of that aspect until they get what they wish for. So it was nice that they showed the down size of her new celebrity too.Good job from every one in this movie big and small roles alike.

Absolutely beautiful and inspiring
This is one of my all-time favourite films. It's an inspiring true story of courage and the power of encouragement. The photography is stunning, there is humour as well as grit, plenty of dramatic tension, and the relationships between the characters are portrayed with subtlety and beauty. I found it very moving without being sentimental There is a director's commentary included in the extras, and it's fascinating to hear how some of the details of the film emerged during the filming process. A number of the children acting in the film, including the wonderful Madina Nalwanga who played the leading role, were from slum areas themselves; so the story portrayed in the film, of someone from an extremely disadvantaged background having a whole new world of possibilities open up, was also something that happened, through the film, to some of the actors. This film is an absolute and original gem, a real triumph.
