The Road to Civil War

Good background to the Civil War series
Road To Civil War starts with the aftermath of the latest iteration of the Kree-Skrull War. Tony Stark calls a council of heroes made up of himself, Namor, Black Bolt, T’Challa, Professor Xavier and Doctrine Strange and proposes they become the world’s protectors. T’Challa opts out warning that it would lead to nothing good. Namor also constantly expresses his skepticism yet decides to join. The council’s first test is the Hulk after he smashes Las Vegas. The council wants to send him into space so he does no more harm, while Namor objects. That then leads to the Superhuman Registration Act which Stark advocates for. Ironically, in his argument for it he warns that if the council didn't back the legislation it would tear the country apart and lead to heroes fighting heroes which foreshadowed exactly what happened. The volume then ends with Spider Man becoming the protégé of Iran Man and Starks seemingly testifying to the Senate against the proposed legislation, but with a secret agenda at work. What’s an interesting sidenote is several scenes from this collection were be used in the Marvel movies. For example, Stark talks about the need for a force to protect the Earth the next time it’s invaded from space, which was the argument Stark made in the Ultron movie. Thor’s hammer falls to Earth and is covered by a military complex like the first Thor movie. Asgard faces Ragnarok like in the last Thor film. There are others as wellAll together the collection is a good read and provides interesting background to the whole Civil War series.

An amazing read that will keep you hooked.
Just an amazing read. The Road to Civil War has a lot of controversial points that make convincing arguments on both sides of the issue on hand. Although the comic doesn't force the reader to choose a side it does add to the fun and joy of reading on to the next book and to see how your side reacts when the ice breaks.

A road with a missing bridge
This seemed like something that was just pieced together. There wasn't much of a road. Just a bunch of side-streets only two of which were remotely connected to the Civil War. The Fantastic Four/Mjolnir story could have been completely left out. It ends without showing any relevance whatsoever to the Superhero Registration Act or Civil War.

Manipulations in history
The origins of the illuminati begins here. We also see the manipulation by one of our heroes that brings about the civil war. With flash backs and present day events we begin to understand that the civil war was a long time coming. Some heroes saw it, some did not. Now the war that pits heroes against each other begins. See Peter Parker revealed to the world as Spider-Man and see his heart broken a his two biggest influences clash.

The path to war
With DC pumping out a universe shattering, cataclysmic event (Infinite Crisis), Marvel answers them with Civil War. The Road to Civil War features various issues from various series' collected together that lead up to the Civil War series; and in turn feature many pivotal events. The Illuminati disbands, as Tony "Iron Man" Stark makes a decision that will alter the course of events to come regarding super hero registration. Not to mention that Spider-Man receives a new suit (designed by Stark) and forges a new direction for himself that many did not see coming. Dr. Doom is back as well, and there a hint of things to come regarding the return of the mighty Thor, as well as Stark's brewing war with Captain America. Despite containing different issues by different creative teams, Road to Civil War never feels uneven like many TPB's with varying writers and artists usually do. Featuring talent like Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski, Brian Michael Bendis, and Alex Maleev; Road to Civil War's biggest con is that it leaves you wanting more, but in that respect, if this doesn't get you excited for Civil War, nothing will. Worth picking up if you missed these issues before Civil War, or are anxiously awaiting the TPB version.

I would definitely recommend this to people that are new to civil war ...
Purchased this alongside the Civil War graphic novel as my first adventures into the written world of Marvel. This set me up for the events in civil war really will, and gave me an insight on the background of the events that lead up to and helped start civil war. I would definitely recommend this to people that are new to civil war or don't know the background to it, like myself. I wouldn't think it really offers much to people who already know the backstory or have already read civil war however.

Meh.. It's not bad.
This was a decent read but did not particularity do much for me personally. I have read Civil War already so knew what the whole issue was here so maybe if I read this for the first time then Civil War my feelings would be different. It is definitely worth a read but for the money I spent on it, I wish I put it towards Infinity Gauntlet or Sinestro: Corps War instead for example!
