Jazz for Lovers: Jazz Piano Solos Series Volume 23

Great arrangements for solo piano, experienced players.
My church piano player found these when the pastor wanted more jazzy hymns. Edstrom's arrangements are not easy, but they are very good. An improviser might find the arrangements some what confining. But as she plays along, I can improvise on flute, after providing her a little guidance.

Way Above Average Like Most of the Volumes of this Series
Great Addition to a Great Series. I'd say 85% of the songs and arrangements hit home. "Thanks for the Memories" does mystify me a bit though. The first 24 bars seem to be a nice, pleasant swing, but on the third page, it abruptly transitions to a rather wandering, not really unpleasant, jazz solo, and never seems to connect the basic tune again. Even the coda seems a bit unrelated. Am I just that musically tone deaf or does this bother others as well? That being said, intermediate players will find it one of their favorites.

Nice and more
I have too many music books, many with music I'm not good enough to play. The arrangements in this book, however, raise me a level. Perhaps better info for a review is that my teacher liked them well enough to inquire for his own (and other students') use.

Splendid
Really great piano book. The arrangements are very playable and have some great chords, not too difficult. I have been playing for 20 years off and on and I can sight read about 80% of each song, but they do not sound easy. Also recommend the Jazz Ballads from this series.Don't miss "Tenderly" in this book, it will cast a spell on you or a lady you are trying to work magic on.

Worthwhile!
Beautiful tunes were included for the advanced intermediate/early advanced player. There were a few solos that were too difficult for me, however, this book is definitely worth buying.

Tricky new sounds to old favorites
I found this new set of arrangements to be fascinating....fairly difficult {I'm self-taught}; but most intriguing for me was what Brent Edstrom with key of C. The complex tones are so surprising when that key can be boring.I need work....but happy to stretch. Enjoy.

This is one of the best books in this series
This is one of the best books in this series. The pieces are challenging, but very beautifully arranged. You will especially like "Taking a Chance on Love," "Tenderly," and "These Foolish Things."

A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening.
Arranged by Brent Edstrom. Four stars, as could have been a stronger selection of melodies, but great job again by B.E. There are 2 songs in particular that I enjoy playing: "These Foolish Things" (one of the greatest melodies ever?) and "Beyond The Sea" (that will get your foot tapping, if only to get the rhythm right!). Fun to play, and fun to listen to, They would sound good if played in a cocktail bar. Some of the songs are relatively easy to sight read IF you are an accomplished pianist, but not all, and this being jazz, the music is littered with accidentals, making it more of a challenge to read. Even the "easy" song arrangements sound good, so don't be put off. Having said that, it is definitely not for beginners, but for intermediate or better pianists. Even if you are an advanced pianist, Brent Edstrom's arrangements are enjoyable to play, and you will impress your friends and relatives. Invite them round for a listen, it's A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening........Song List:•Beyond The Sea (featured in the Walt Disney/Pixar film FINDING NEMO)•Bill (from SHOW BOAT)•But Beautiful (from ROAD TO RIO)•Darn That Dream•For All We Know•Here's That Rainy Day (from CARNIVAL IN FLANDERS)•I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me•I Didn't Know What Time It Was (from TOO MANY GIRLS)•I Should Care•I Thought About You•If I Should Lose You (from the Paramount Picture ROSE OF THE RANCHO)•Imagination•A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening•Moonlight In Vermont•My One And Only Love•My Ship (from the Musical Production LADY IN THE DARK)•Prelude To A Kiss•Taking A Chance On Love•Tenderly (from TORCH SONG)•Thanks For The Memory (from the Paramount Picture BIG BROADCAST OF 1938)•These Foolish Things (Remind Me Of You)•Time After Time (from the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Picture IT HAPPENED IN BROOKLYN)•You Are Too Beautiful (from HALLELUJAH, I'M A BUM)•You Go To My Head

Not difficult to play
Excellent arrangements of some lovely pieces, I'm a big fan of the jazz piano series and this doesn't disappoint.

Not worth the money
These solos are very basic and do not stand up to the Jazz piano player by John Kember series
