Will this square still work ok for laying out stair stringers ? It looks like it would but I'm not sure about the aluminum plate.

I don't think that this would work for laying out stair stringers. There are only measurement markings on the "blade" side and not the handle. In laying out stair stringers you usually need to measure the rise and run of the treads with both sides of a carpenters framing square. Using stair gauges https://www.amazon.com/Johnson-Level-Tool-Contractor-Square/dp/B00002NBKH/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1474404732&sr=8-7&keywords=framing+square would also help as it locks in the run and rise.

What is the thickness of the blade?

Blade is 1/4" thick and the handle is 3/4" thick.

Can someone tell me the weight of this square? Says Item weight 5 pounds and shipping weight 4.4 pounds, sounds way too much and inconsistent.

I think it’s a mistake...no way this item is 5 pounds... it’s not a weightlifting item... good question... now I will have to take note on the weight for the square
