Interesting mini review of the Sunshine state covering a little of everything
Interesting mini review of the Sunshine state covering a little of everything from the Native Americans, The Spanish Rule, Space Exploration and HurricanesInteresting book. Don't really know much about the history of Florida so this is a very good introduction The book covers the Native Americans, their interactions with the first colonists from Europe. The battle for control of Florida first with the Spanish vs Native Americans. Then the Spanish against the British. The French tried to get involved with Florida but were unsuccessful. Then of course there was making of the USA the integration of Florida with the rest of the US. A little known war between the Spanish and the US for final control of Florida which the US won. That event also explains how the Americans got so much influence in the Philippines. Overall a good read explaining a lot of how the modern state of Florida was formed. The good and the bad. The mention of the treatment of black people after the civil war had ended is important. The unluckiness of the state having suffered so many hurricanes and typhoons make this book a very interesting read. Overall its worth spending time with

Reasonably succinct
This is the second of these Captivating History books I've read. The first, about the Spanish American War, was a disaster. This one is slightly better. At least the editing is more on target. There is some problem with the timelines in this book, as events are not always linear, but it is a fairly concise look at the major events that have shaped Florida history, going back to well before the Europeans invaded and up to fairly recent history. It uses a lot of Wikipedia and similar general interest sources, none of which are documented, and the photos are similarly familiar. There are no maps, even though many locations are mentioned frequently. In short, it is not totally amateurish, but not professional or academic or historical enough to be considered more than a casual history.
