Like drinking from a china cup
Great to have on your desk where a spill-resistant cover isn't needed. Makes drinking feel more like your favorite kitchen mug, not a travel-only tumbler. I little pricey, but makes a great mug even better.

It's fine for my purposes
I like this top mainly because it is much shallower and doesn't protrude into the cup, taking away available volume for coffee. I've heard that the open top makes the cup struggle to maintain 140 degrees. I'm not sure about that. I can only say that my preferred temperature is 130 degrees and the mug has no problem maintaining that. Also, I chose the open top because I do not use it as a commuter mug. It sits on the charging plate next to my laptop and never leaves the house. If I took it out I would have to resort to using the original top.Value for the money? That's subjective. I guess if you can justify $179 for a coffee mug, you can justify $30 for a top.

The company likely knows that anyone purchasing the Ember is willing to spend a good chunk on luxury
I'm going with 4-stars because the price is extremely high... way too high to even be adequately marketable. If this was $20-$25, I'd give this 5-starts. As of today there are only 3 reviews... and I believe the reason for that, is that the price is ridiculous. The company likely knows that anyone purchasing the Ember is willing to spend a good chunk on luxury, but $40 on a ceramic ring, is almost insulting (to their otherwise-loyal customer base). If I was offering psychological consulting for this company, I would have warned about the unintended consequences of setting the price this high. However, my curiosity got the best of me, and my intention was to send it back, after taking a look at it.With that said, I've decided to keep it. Why?I'm a nerd. And to be honest, the plastic lid that comes with the Ember is, itself, quite nicely designed. I wouldn't be bothered at all by using that all the time. In fact, I use it 50% (or more) of the time so far, because it protects against splashing or flying insects (I sometimes conduct therapy sessions outdoors). Also, if using the battery, it keeps the heat in better, helping save a tiny bit of battery (for more detail on battery expectations, see my review of the actual Ember). So, yes, I'm keeping it. But, no, I don't recommend it at this price.HOWEVER, if you are looking for a unique GIFT for someone that owns the Ember Mug, this is thoughtful and creative, very lovely gift idea to get them--since they would (hopefully) never get it for themselves.-R.

Pass on this one
For $35, I’m not impressed. Quality isn’t great (see exposed plastic pics). I contacted ember for a replacement (it’s new) and it takes days to get responses and despite it being 2 weeks, still haven’t gotten confirmation they will replace it, so I’ll return it through Amazon. In chatting with Ember customer service, they confirmed this is actually a piece of plastic, with a “food grade fda approved ceramic coating” - so it’s $35 for a plastic ring. Apparently the chipping is “normal wear and tear” so at some point - this will turn into a $35 white plastic ring. The rubber band around the halo, which creates the seal between the halo and the cup (it is press fit, NOT screw fit like the standard travel lid) will pull off from time to time when you switch between the travel lid and the “halo” - so you have to stretch it back around the lip and put it back in place often. Battery life suffers tremendously with the open lid as well, as the unit has to work much harder to keep your set temp.I own the 10oz open topped ember mug, which at $99 is only ~3X the cost of this plastic ring, and I can confirm that if you want an open cup experience - buy that, as it’s much better than this janky setup. Frankly the standard mug is better than the travel mug, so save your money on that too, unless you’re actually going to take your coffee on the move.Overall - pass on this halo. The “mouth feel” and drinking experience isn’t great, you’re still holding a cheap feeling plastic travel mug (versus the solid granite like feel of the standard ember mug) and you’ll likely end up drinking chips of “food grade ceramic coating” like I did in your coffee as the cheap coating wears off. Ultimately as the coating depletes, you’ll be left with a $30 plastic lid, that doesn’t keep yourself coffee warm as long as the standard travel lid, isn’t spill proof and will eventually have that same “plastic” lid/mouthfeel. The press fit lid also does not, and cannot sit completely flush due to the rubber ring, so there is an annoying gap between the top of the cup, and the bottom portion of the lid.I can say without reservation, it’s been years since I’ve bought something this pointless and poorly executed. If it came with the mug for free along with the travel lid - I’d never use it.Update: I have since seen two other examples in the flesh of this product - both of which suffered from the same shortcomings. It puzzles me how/why this product gets such good reviews and makes me question the integrity of the other reviews. $35 will buy you an entire Yeti mug (with lid!) or as I mentioned earlier - a third of the cost of the standard mug which provides a dramatically superior open topped experience. With the “stock” screw on lid leaving little to be desired, liquid tight, and offering substantially improved battery life, paying $35 for a product that detracts from the user experience in every way (save for being able to smell the coffee easier) and looks like a cheap add on (coating chipping and panel gap) is puzzling.

Worth it
Bit high in price, I got this on a whim for my cup, I actually wondered if it was worth it and it was. Not only does it make the drinking experice better with that warm ceramic cup to your lips feel. But it also brings up the amount your cup can hold. You can get a extra oz. Or so in there and the open too makes beverages with creme more enjoyable. My only concern was that it was press fit lid with a gasket, but it sealed and works great.

Battery does not last two hours without charge support. Cup does hold liquid temperature where you set as long as battery lasts.
