Product description Two brothers struggle to win the world class title in a cross country cycling competition.Genre: Feature Film-Action/AdventureRating: PG13Release Date: 3-FEB-2004Media Type: DVD .com American Flyers could roughly be referred to as a cross between Breaking Away (also written by Steve Tesich) and Brian's Song. Sports physician Marcus (Kevin Costner, sporting a ludicrously big mustache) coaxes his flaky brother David (David Marshall Grant) into doing something with his life and training for a grueling bike race in the Colorado Rockies. The scenario is complicated, though, by family frictions and the fact that the brothers' dad died of a cerebral aneurysm that has been handed down to one of the brothers. The two train rigorously for the big event (part of their routine involves outrunning an angry pit bull every day), then pack the van and head West. Marcus's girlfriend is also the ex-wife of his main rival in the race circuit, providing a bit more intrigue. Veteran action director John Badham (Saturday Night Fever, War Games) excels during the bike-race segments, capturing the breathtaking scenery and the demanding nature of the event nicely. The film is somewhat hobbled, though, by the screenplay and character development; the film plays a bit too much to the sports-movie cliché and the dysfunctional-family story seems like a lengthy prologue to the race. Also, try not to be too bothered by the annoyingly dated soundtrack, and this should be a fairly entertaining, unpretentious little film. --Jerry Renshaw

Biking and Kevin Costner
If you like biking or Kevin Costner you will probably like this movie. If you don’t like biking AND you don’t like Kevin Costner, DEFINITELY Don’t watch this movie. The Five star rating is only for Costner/Biking fans. The rest of you should watch Breaking Away. It s got biking and Patrick Swayze but it’s not really about Patrick Swayze or biking. It’s just a good movie.

Classic Motivating Cyclist movie from the 80's
Finally on Bluray waited years for this to happened and glad it did . The movie is a very good if you never seen it. But for the 1980's cyclist is a must own movie classic. Sound is good, Day scenes very clear the dark scene a little granier maybe in 4K they will improve.

Sport Porn about Bikes in the 80's. It's fun!
Two brothers coping with a family loss in their own way struggle with congenital disease while bonding over a pro bike race. Each an elite athlete in their spare time they take on the pros and some old ghosts as they grind their gears up and down America's Rocky mountains trying to break away from their past.Ahh, the training montages, the epic record breaking scene of the unknown talent. The competition, the trials, the pain, taking it to the limit! All the great ingredients of your favorite sport porn, only with bikes. Sport porn is all too common, but to see a sport porn about bikes is so unusual it deserves a little leeway, at least if you like bikes and want to see the sport taken seriously enough for someone to make a sport porn about it. (Yes, I know, steroids, etc. I hate it, too. But did America stop watching Baseball or Football even though we all know they are Roided up all over the place? See, you're actually OK with drug use and people lying about it, you just can't get into pro cycling yet, and that's OK.)This movie plays with plot and facts fast and loose, but it is just so darn 80's it's hard to stay mad at it. The frenemy, the old grudge, the love triangle. It's all there! It's the same story arc as the Karate Kid, but this time the Kid has a brother and one of them might be sick. Watch the movie to find out who! I know you love the original Karate Kid, so watch this one and you'll see what I mean.Enjoy!

Good Entertainment
Most of the acting and plot features are quite good.Notwithstanding, some things seem contrived. For instance, I'm unsure why the overweight kid was added to the story -- unnecessary except perhaps to add to the movie's length. Without spoiling I'll try to be coy -- one of the riders has blood running out his ear and nose for a known reason, but he's not taken to the hospital (that seemed ridiculous to me). There's another instance where one cycle racer manhandles his opponent right in front of a chase vehicle with judges/refs. That, too, seemed absurd.Other than these beefs, it's a terrific movie that I've watched countless times over the years. No doubt I will watch it many more times.

Superbe film

Terrific
Terrific movie, terrific cast.....watch some of these movies folks......forget all the negative Waterworld hype and watch a Kevin Costner movie. By the way, I found some things to like in Waterworld. Kevin was just way ahead of his time on that one.

Love this film
Loved this movie when I saw in in the '80s on TV. Haven't seen it broadcasted since so was looking for it on DVD. A reasonable price when bought secondhand (but extortionately priced new)! Copy is fine; a bit grainy -but what would you expect from a film from 1985?)

Great film
Great film, wanted it for years. Slightly dated as it is an 80's film.
