Extension was the last of 3 unique Blue Note sessions led by the singular saxophonist George Braith in the early 1960s. The album was rooted in soul jazz - with Grant Green (guitar), Billy Gardner (organ), and Clarence Johnston (drums) - but Braith's adventurous spirit led the music into unexpected realms on memorable originals like "Nut City." Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series is all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Optimal.

First time on vinyl since the 70’s!
An album that hasn’t been reissued on vinyl since the 70’s so Blue Note gives this session a chance at gaining a new audience even if I’m not sure this would qualify as a true “classic”.Because of his ability to play multiple horns at once Braith may get some comparisons to Roland Kirk but stylistically he’s quite different and there’s not a lot of this effect / technique used on this record anyway - and to be honest I prefer it when he’s just playing one horn at a time - the multiple horn effect seems a bit superfluous to my ears when used here even if it’s used reasonably tastefully and sparingly. My interest was more in Grant Green when buying this record and I still feel that way after a few listens as I still find him the most interesting player on this record.Overall this is an interesting and enjoyable session with some unique sonic textures and could have easily been a candidate for the Tone Poet series which showcases some of the more obscure Blue Notes.Sound quality was quite good and the pressing was excellent with no major defects to report on my copy.

Very Strong Blue Note Session
I have this session as part of a two disc set Blue Note released years ago. Any recording with Grant Green is going to be first rate, but the other two players, especially organist Billy Gardner, are also really strong. Braith wrote most of the tunes, and they're memorable and swinging. This is, broadly speaking, soul jazz, but the compositions and the playing are innovative and expand the genre's possibilities. Excellent mastering and the pressing is up to the standards set by other releases in this Blue Note Classic series.

Great sounding vinyl repress!
Like all of the Tone Poet and Classic reissue series by Blue Note this is an excellent vinyl record at an incredible price! The remastering and pressing are delightful to listen to and surface noise is very low. High quality jackets as well!
